We’ve already discussed why we think that 2024 is the year of OLED, so today we’re going to compare two similar gaming monitors – the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 vs Acer Predator X49 X. Both OLED, both super ultrawide, but which one should you buy? There are already a couple of different OLED G9 models to think about, but we’ll be focusing on the 2024 model, which brings a refreshed look.
While waiting for both the OLED G9 and Predator X49 X release dates, we can do some early comparisons based on the revealed specs. Both of them offer an immersive gaming experience, no doubt being top contenders for our best OLED ultrawide monitor guide! Let’s see how they compare.

Directly compare the specs of these two displays and you’ll find that much is the same. Both boast a stunning 49-inch QD-OLED panel, at the DQHD resolution, which is basically two 1440p monitors side by side with a 32:9 aspect ratio. Both have excellent specs for gaming thanks to the high 240Hz refresh rate paired with rapid 0.03ms response time, one of the defining features of OLED tech. The OLED G9 does advertise FreeSync Premium Pro, whereas the Acer display is one tier down.
Based on the current model of the OLED G9, the USB-C port does not offer PD (power delivery) for charging. This may also be the case with the 2024 refresh, though Samsung hasn’t explicitly ruled this out yet. It also lacks a KVM switch, so these are two areas that the Predator X49 X has an advantage – both useful traits for productivity workflows.
Another thing we have to mention though is the smart TV and gaming hub features (for cloud gaming) on the OLED G9, which make it more of a multi-purpose entertainment hub than just a computer monitor. Samsung is also adding Multi Control and SmartThings Hub to the 2024 refresh to easily connect to your other Samsung devices and integrate with smart home tech.
When it comes to price, there is still lots of uncertainty. Neither one of these monitors have yet had their price revealed (at the time of writing). We have made some estimates though – and we think they’ll be fairly similar to remain competitive.
The original 2023 OLED G9 (G95SC) released for $2,199.99, though it soon dropped in price – settling at $1,799.99 not too long after its release. We’d say that this is partly due to Samsung also releasing the G93SC variant, which was the very same minus smart TV and gaming hub features. The G95SD will indeed have these features too as we explained above, so we expect a higher price than the X49 X.
When it comes to OLED monitors, they are highly popular for gaming. This is because this panel type offers unmatched responsiveness and crisp colors with excellent HDR visuals. On top of that, high refresh rates and excellent motion control. OLEDs really do provide you super smooth visuals, free from ghosting or screen tear – you can thank FreeSync or G-Sync implementation for the latter. We think that both the OLED G9 and X49 X will be largely the same in gaming scenarios. Their key specs are the same, though Samsung do have the slight edge with FreeSync Premium Pro versus Acer’s FreeSync Premium support.
As ultrawide gaming monitors, the pair of them are best used for immersive games – whether that be a single-player experience or vast open-world MMO. The high level of responsiveness and clarity from these OLED screens would actually suit something like a competitive FPS game, but given the size of the screen and 32:9 aspect ratio, this is not really the best kind of match.
We’ve already mentioned the gaming hub on the OLED G9, so this is another thing to think about. You’ll be able to stream games directly to the G95SD without the need for a console or PC. Samsung is partnered with services such as Xbox Remote Play and Nvidia GeForce Now, though ultrawide support (particularly 32:9) is lacking through these services.

Deciding between these two is going to be tough. Since they offer much the same experience, we’re keen to see how they compare on price once they are available to buy. We do think that the OLED G9 will be the more popular of the two, as the refreshed 2024 model can only improve on the already-popular original.
As for the Acer Predator X49 X, it remains a good alternative that can be a real winner. Thanks to the built in KVM switch & USB Type-C 90W port, we’re inclined to suggest the X49 X. Sure, the OLED G9 has some interesting smart features, but they feel much more niche for most users. However, it is likely Samsung will release another variant which forgoes the smart TV experience for a cheaper price.
Thanks to their super ultrawide aspect ratio and large 49-inch panels, both of these monitors offer a ton of screen real estate which is useful for productivity. That being said, OLED monitors aren’t generally seen as the best for productivity (solely) due to the risk of burn-in. If you’re working all day long on the same monitor, the chances are you’re going to have static content showing throughout the day.
Manufacturers are actively fighting causes of burn-in, so you can still use an OLED monitor for productivity if you regularly make use of features such as pixel refresh and pixel shift, both of which should be automatic by default. On top of that though, some people even suggest measures such as lowering brightness and hiding your taskbar. Here’s a quick guide with some useful advice.
The original OLED G9 was indeed the world’s first 49-inch OLED monitor, but there is finally some close competition from alternative manufacturers such as Acer. Comparing these 2024 models leads us to concluding that they are very similar – though that isn’t surprising.
We think that both are going to be fantastic for gaming, whereas the Acer does actually offer a couple of productivity features to take the win in this regard. The smart TV and gaming hub on the OLED G9 may give it the edge for some users though, even if these aren’t particularly designed with 32:9 content in mind.
