We’ve already covered whether or not you can wear glasses with PSVR 2, so now we thought we’d talk about what size room you actually need to use the damned thing.

Since the PSVR 2 announcement all the way back at CES 2022, there has been a lot of speculation about the specs of the headset itself, and the necessary things the user needs, for example, space. So, What size room do you need for PSVR 2?

What size room do you need for PSVR 2?

According to Sony’s bumper FAQ PSVR 2, there are different room size requirements for the different ‘VR play styles’ offered by the PSVR 2. the different modes are Roomscale, Sitting, and Standing.

PSVR 2 room size requirements

  • Roomscale: (allows more movement): A minimum play area of 2m × 2m (6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in) in the room is required.
  • Sitting: Requires a minimum play area of 1m × 1m (3 ft 4 in × 3 ft 4 in). Make sure you have enough space to move your arms freely.
  • Standing: Requires a minimum play area of 1m × 1m (3 ft 4 in × 3 ft 4 in). Make sure you have enough space to move your arms freely.

This is particularly pleasing knowledge, as you don’t need a massive area to use the PSVR, and, if we’re being honest, you can probably get away with significantly less than the 1m x 1m that they recommend for the sitting and standing playstyles. This is particularly useful for the majority of people, as it’s obviously rare that people have a spare entirely empty 2m x 2m area for VR.

Additionally, you’ll be able to customize the play area to account for any errant furniture and other such obstacles. Below are a couple of images to illustrate this feature.

What size room do you need for PSVR? Our experience

Of course, now that the embargo has passed, we can reveal our experience regarding PSVR 2 room sizes. During our testing, we had the PSVR 2 set up in the office where space was of no concern, and in smaller rooms too.

Of course, it worked perfectly in the office, but we found some difficulties using it at home, with sitting mode causing considerable annoyance. We covered this in our full PSVR 2 review, but essentially, the PSVR 2 doesn’t do well in small areas, with the sitting mode being particularly irritating.

This was mostly caused by the PSVR 2 positioning our digital bodies too high up, so we had to awkwardly writhe around sometimes. For example, in Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, this caused issues as there’s a space screwdriver that hangs from your hip, however, sat down, the screwdriver was inside our thigh, so we had to wriggle around to get the controller down far enough to grab it.

So, it’s not a perfect experience for those with small rooms, though, those with the recommended 2m x 2m of space should have no issues.
