Are PSVR Controllers Compatible with PSVR 2?

The PSVR 2 and its controllers will replace the original PSVR and PSVR controllers on February 22, 2023. It’s been revealed that the original PSVR controllers are not compatible with the latest PSVR 2, as there is no forward or backward compatibility on these devices.

While some might view this as a disadvantage, we believe it was completely necessary in order to make sure that the new PSVR 2 takes a big step forward in VR technology. Backward and forward compatibility typically limits technological breakthroughs and could create bottlenecks for one or both devices.

The PSVR is almost six years old, which is why making the PSVR 2 backward compatible could have made it less advanced. As Hideaki Nishino, the Senior Vice President at Sony, explains, backward compatibility was deliberately not included in order to maintain a “next-generation VR experience.”

So, if you’re thinking about getting the new PSVR 2, you should know that you won’t be able to use the original PSVR controllers with it.

Do the original PSVR controllers work with PSVR 2?

No, seeing as original PSVR games don’t work with the PSVR 2, there is no reason to make the original controllers work.

Do PSVR games work on the PSVR 2?

No. Backwards compatibility is not supported. However, PSVR 2 patches are arriving for PSVR 2 games, often without extra charge.
