Starfield has to be one of Bethesda’s most expansive, highly anticipated RPG games of all time, but everything isn’t quite what it seems. News of an exclusive partnership between AMD and Bethesda has spread fast across our plant and has had fans worrying. Does Starfield have Ray Tracing and DLSS support?

We know of the 30 FPS limitations placed on even the current-gen consoles, if they aren’t up to the challenge of 60 FPS, then surely we’ll need all the help we can get on PC?

Does Starfield have Ray Tracing and DLSS support?

As of right now, it is unknown for sure whether Starfield will get Ray Tracing support, as a Digital Foundry video states. In this video, Digital Foundry concludes that the lighting engine has been updated for Starfield, but there’s no mention of RTX yet. That does not mean, however, that it will not be added at a later date.

As for DLSS, and Nvidia features in general, it does not look like there’s going to be any kind of support for DLSS or Intel’s XESS upon the launch of Starfield.

Data miners, such as Sebastian Castellanos on Twitter, did have a cheeky scrape through the files of the preload version of Starfield and were perplexed to find only mention of AMD’s FSR.

Surely a decision that alienates all those that possess an Nvidia GPU, which is around 74% of the PC gaming community, according to the Steam Hardware Survey.

Fear not, however, there have been reports of modders promising to bring all of the features to Starfield that the AMD partnership has left out. It’s not uncommon for modders to be fixing Bethesda games post-launch.

AMD and Starfield exclusivity

The close collaboration between AMD and Bethesda throughout Starfield’s development cycle has firmly cemented AMD as an exclusive partner for Starfield. This partnership ensures that AMD will hold a favored position upon the game’s launch.

We’ve already covered the topic of AMD being favored by Bethesda regarding Starfield, but here’s a little rundown:

Bethesda is collaborating closely with AMD engineers to optimize the game for the best possible hardware performance. Despite this partnership and the inclusion of FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2), the absence of AMD’s upcoming FSR 3 technology has raised eyebrows.

This decision has sparked various reactions from users, evident in comments under videos and threads on Reddit. A recent report has intensified discussions, suggesting that AMD-sponsored titles tend to lean towards exclusivity.

This has led to the inclusion of FSR as an upscaling solution while bypassing Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS. Bethesda has not officially confirmed the lack of support for these technologies, but fans are expressing concerns about potential exclusivity limiting software options.

The exclusion of other advanced features like DLSS 3 frame generation or ray tracing due to AMD GPU limitations could impact gamers, particularly as Nvidia dominates the majority of the market share.
