Counter-Strike 2 players would be happy to play custom workshop maps in CS2 because it was very popular in CS:GO. With new gameplay and better graphics, it’d be great to see how each map would improve in the new Source 2 Engine, which is the successor to the engine used in CS:GO.

CS2 is in a limited testing phase, even though it’s out for the public, so there are some features that are missing, like achievements. As the engines are different, it may be necessary to make changes to custom maps.

CS2 – Can you play on custom workshop maps?

No, you cannot play custom workshop maps in CS2 just yet. The software is still in a limited testing phase, even though it is available to the public. All maps in the steam workshop for CS:GO will be unavailable without messing with the developer console and making downloads outside of what the developer intended.

According to the Steam FAQ, Counter-Strike 2 will not have workshop or custom map support at “launch, but Workshop map support is coming soon.” So we think that maybe when the game is fully out without any testing limitations, it will have workshop support and players will have the ability to play on custom maps.

If you do something that causes you to get these maps before Valve intends, there shouldn’t be much of a problem, but this may go against terms set by Valve, so be careful if using outside means.

Why can’t you play custom workshop maps in CS2?

The move from the original Source engine to the Source 2 engine is a significant one. You can’t just move assets over to different engines and expect them to work with no issue. Even engines made by the same company have drastic changes and can render old materials and assets unusable in the upgrade.

We believe it has a lot to do with the change, and that Valve is ensuring that those older maps can transfer over with no issue. We may see that workshop support is available but without any of the older maps, which would show how much different the new engine is from the old one. While there could be a variety of reasons, that is the one we believe to be the most true.
