Sonic Colors is a well-liked platformer that was created by SEGA’s Sonic Team back in 2010 for the Nintendo Wii. It expanded upon the boost formula that was first introduced in handheld game Sonic Rush, but had been translated to 3D two years prior by Sonic Unleashed.
There are two versions of the game, one of which is a 2D platformer that remains a Nintendo DS exclusive. People tend to call that version Sonic Colours DS, despite that not actually being the name of the game. It’s just an easy way to differentiate the two.
Sonic Colors Trailer
Here’s the Sonic Colors trailer for the original game. We’ve chosen one that showcased gameplay so you can see what it looked like. Back then the game was exclusive to the Nintendo Wii, unless you had the Dolphin Emulator on your PC.
Sonic Colors Ultimate Trailer
Here’s the Sonic Colors Ultimate trailer SEGA released for the remastered version. While it looks quite different —and some people may even prefer the original look— you can see that a lot of work has been done to make it into a modern game in any case.
What’s Sonic Colors’ Plot?
Under the guise of finally apologising for his prior evil schemes, Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik is in the process of building and opening an interstellar amusement park in orbit around Sonic’s world.
Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails the Fox don’t believe the mad doctor is sincere for even a minute, and they go to investigate the situation. To nobody’s real surprise, Eggman is obviously up to no good once again. He’s abducting aliens called Wisps to steal their “hyper-go-on energy” and has stolen their entire planets to build his park on top of, too.
Tails builds a language translator and it’s not long before the aliens, led by a Wisp called Yakker, ask for help. Wisps can share their unique and wonderful abilities with people they trust, so they share their powers with Sonic as he quickly sets off to save their worlds from the Eggman Empire and it’s fiendish robot army.
What is Sonic Colors’ Ultimate?
Sonic Colors Ultimate is a remaster of Sonic Colors for the Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation and Windows PC. It not only improves the graphics and has a remixed soundtrack, but also adds several new features to the game, including character customization and versus showdown race-battles with rival robot A.I. Metal Sonic.

Sonic Colors Rise of the Wisps
As part of the promotion for Sonic Colors Ultimate, SEGA had animator and fan Tyson Hesse (who designed Sonic the Hedgehog for the 2020 feature film) create a 12 minute animated short film called Sonic Colors Rise of the Wisps for YouTube. It expands upon the prelude to the story and features the voice cast of the Sonic Colors Ultimate video game.
