Total War Pharaoh Setting

Total War: Pharaoh focuses on the period of 1200 BCE which is in the bronze age and focuses primarily on the bronze-age collapse. This was the heyday of Egypt’s New Kingdom empire. However, Egypt’s nearest rivals, the Hittites, who live in Anatolia (today’s Turkey), are keen to take advantage of Egypt’s vulnerability following the death of the pharaoh.

Total War: Pharaoh puts players in the role of a pharaoh, granting them the ability to command vast armies and engage in thrilling battles to become the new leader of the people of Egypt. The Canaanites are caught in the middle of a war between the two regional superpowers, either choosing a side or trying to fend off both empires and ally with the marauding Sea Peoples.

In the world of ancient Egypt, politics played a significant role in shaping the destiny of civilizations. Total War: Pharaoh captures this aspect by introducing a complex political system where players must form alliances, negotiate with other factions, and make critical decisions to maintain stability and secure their reign.

Creative Assembly has a long-standing reputation for its commitment to historical accuracy, and Total War: Pharaoh is no exception. From the recreated ancient Egyptian architecture and landscapes to authentic cultural and religious elements, the game aims to transport players to the heart of ancient Egypt, allowing them to immerse themselves in its rich history and mythology.

The base game contains eight playable factions from three diverse great cultures:

  • Egyptian: Ramesses, Seti, Tausret, Amenmesse
  • Canaan: Bay and Irsu
  • Hittite: Kurunta and Suppiluliuma

Total War Pharaoh Gameplay

While Total War: Pharaoh will not be a repeat of the series’ experiments with mythology and fantasy in Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Three Kingdoms. Although it adds a variety of new mechanics to Total War, it does so in an interesting and complex manner without delving away from reality. In fact, it goes heavy on reality as the fate of the real-time battles no longer are beholden to fantastical events. Instead, you have to worry about faction leaders, starting positions, and controlling the tides of battle.

As the ancient world moves through eras of prosperity, crisis, and cataclysm, the campaign map reflects its condition. There are more severe weather events, natural disasters, invaders, thunderstorms in the nile, repeated attacks from the ravaging Sea Peoples, and finally a chaotic dark age as conflict and political instability spread throughout the region, as seen in history.

Battle simulation changes have also been made to the sieges to make them more grounded, realistic. As troops approach a settlement’s walls, they will no longer be able to access ladders that appear from thin air. A player will need to decide ahead of time how many ladders to construct and bring into battle, as well as whether prolonging the siege is worth the time and resources needed for it. The use of sappers as a means of undermining the defenses of a settlement is another option.

Armor is no longer indefinite. The armor degradation stat for armored units measures how many more blows their armor can survive before it breaks. The armor on those units will eventually break, making them more vulnerable to damage.

Once again, weather conditions affect battles, but this time the weather can change during a battle. The weather can change from a sunny day to a massive sandstorm, which affects troops’ morale and visibility during battle. When it rains, the solid ground can turn into mud, slowing troop movement or fouling chariot wheels, and sweltering heat exhausts troops much more quickly. During battles, fires can start, and small fires can spread from dry scrub ground cover to trees and buildings to become raging blazes.

Building and managing cities is a crucial aspect of Total War: Pharaoh. Players will have the opportunity to design and construct awe-inspiring ancient Egyptian cities, complete with iconic structures such as the Great Pyramids, temples, and surrounding terrain. Careful planning and resource management will be essential to ensure the prosperity and growth of these cities. From recruiting and training troops to planning intricate battle strategies, players must utilize their military prowess to dominate their rivals on the battlefield. Total War: Pharaoh introduces new gameplay mechanics like a revamped battle system, city management, and a dynamic campaign map, providing more hours of immersive gameplay.

Total War Pharaoh Trailer

Below is the trailer for Total War Pharaoh, it shows the landscape and a pharaoh presiding over it. You can see that while Egypt is an unmatched power and the pharaoh is technically the leader of these great nations, the area is on the verge of societal collapse. This Total War title is the perfect setting to show the brutality of Egypt during the height of its power.

The arid deserts of the Sinai Peninsula and the magnificent visual reimagining are clearly shown here. This is a great announcement trailer that alludes to the dramatic shifts in political intrigue.
