Nvidia’s latest graphics card, the stunning RT 4070 is finally here. Boasting plenty of performance that clocks up around 1.3X faster than the RTX 3070 and a price that doesn’t break the bank, the 4070 offers a lot of bang for your buck.

Thanks to DLSS, expect silky smooth frame rates at 4K in most games – providing your set up is up to scratch. But how does Nvidia’s card fare at 8K? Is it a stretch too far or can it run 8K resolution? Here’s everything you need to know.

Can the 4070 do 8K resolution?

In short, the RTX 4070 would struggle with native 8K resolution in a number of games despite having a hefty 12GB of VRAM. However, this all depends on what game you are running. For example, in less graphically intensive games, such as CSGO, the 3070 was able to get 60FPS at 8K, providing DLSS was engaged.

We would expect stronger performance here with the 4070 – but again, DLSS would need to be engaged or it’ll likely lead to hindered performance. We wouldn’t even think about trying Ray Tracing at native 8K or with DLSS engaged with the 4070 – it’s simply not powerful enough on paper (more on this in the next section).

When we dive into the 4070 tech, we see this is a card targeting 1440p enthusiast and 4K gamers – not really those after 8K resolution. This is evident in the far lower CUDA core count than other Nvidia cards designed to run at higher resolutions. The RTX 4090 for example has nearly 3X the CUDA cores of the 4070, while its clock speed it around 600 MHz less than the 4090. This coupled with half of the GDDR6X VRAM of the 4090, which boasts a massive 24GB of VRAM, means the 4070 is very much aligning itself with 1440p gaming and not 8K.

In fact, with the 4070, we would fully expect gamers to utilize DLSS to ensure adequate performance at 4K resolution. Coupled with the latest in upscaling technology and you can get by on a 4K monitor, especially if 60fps is all that you need.

For those after 8K gaming, the Nvidia RTX 4090 is the way to go, with enough horsepower to power even top-end games at 8K resolution.
