Google Assistant has been assisting us for years through our Android phones and watches alike, and many feared that the rise of AI language models would be the end of Google Assistant forever. thankfully, however, that’s not the case. Good news for Google Assistant fans – Google Assistant is here to stay.
A leaked Google memo shows Google is still committed to Google Assistant
Thanks to a leaked internal memo meant for the folks that work on the Assistant and AI internally at Google, we can see that the tech titan is still “deeply committed” to the Google Assistant even in a world where AI is on the rise.

Not only that, but the team over at Google is pushing toward a “supercharged Assistant” powered by the latest Large Language Model technology. Likely the same technology used to power Google BARD. Google says it is “deeply committed” to Google Assistant and knows it is the key to helping to cement “people’s strong desire for assistive, conversational technology that can improve their lives.”
The memo also indicates that the company is “starting with mobile” as its jumping-off point for this undertaking. While the exact implications remain unclear, it’s worth noting that Assistant for Android is already in the process of developing an LLM-powered capability: summarizing web pages, as reported by 9to5Google.
It is highly probable that many of the LLM-powered functionalities planned for Assistant will initially roll out on Android and iOS platforms.
Theoretically, these intelligent LLM features would extend to smart home devices utilizing Assistant, including smart speakers and smart displays. However, the memo does not explicitly mention any specific details regarding the integration with these systems, speculates AndroidAuthrity
The rise of AI language models has caused some concern for the future of Google Assistant, but it seems as though that future is pretty solid. Google Assistant has been helping millions of people around the world since 2016 and it would be a real shame to see it put out of commission.
