New Fable game announced by Microsoft

It’s been long-rumored, even referred to as the worst kept secret game project, but today it’s official, Microsoft is making a new Fable. Developed by British studio Playground Games, the team behind the brilliant Forza Horizon series, and for my money probable one of the reliable studios in Microsoft’s entire first-party stable. This shift of genre marks a departure from the kinds of games they’ve previously worked on for Microsoft, but I’m excited to see what their take is on this beloved action RPG series.

The announcement was very light on detail, with a pre-rendered trailer demonstrating that the blend of a traditional fantasy setting with a lighthearted comedy twist that the series is famous for will indeed be returning.

Playground Games have made their name developing open-world games that draw heavily from real-world locations, so it’s going to be interesting to see what approach they take with building out a world that’s more fiction than fact.

Named simply “Fable”, we’re not completely sure if it’s intended as a direct sequel to the existing Fable games, some kind of reboot, or something else. We’re not actually sure if “Fable” is the full name, or if it will get a number or subtitle added at some point. Microsoft said this of the announcement”

“A new beginning for the legendary franchise. Explore a land of fantastical creatures and wondrous places.”

Not much to go on for now, but we’ll keep an eye out for more news on this title as it becomes available.

What is the new Fable coming out?

Microsoft remained coy on details like a release date. It will be coming to their next-generation Xbox Series X console, and PC, but we don’t know when. Microsoft showed this as part of their Xbox Games Showcase, and promise that they have plans for more similar live stream events throughout the rest of the year.
