Over 100,000 ChatGPT accounts stolen
Neowin reports that the research showed that the Asia-Pacific region had the highest number of stolen accounts (40.5%) between June 2022 and May 2023. The United States, Vietnam, Brazil, and Egypt were also heavily affected by this cyber attack.
The company’s Threat Intelligence platform discovered that some accounts have been compromised by hackers who trade stolen information on illegal websites.
Over the past year, the number of affected accounts reached a peak of 26,802 in May 2023, which is a concerning situation for users.
Group-IB mentioned that as ChatGPT becomes more popular for business and software development, sensitive information is shared on the platform. This makes it an attractive target for hackers who want to benefit illegally.
Group-IB found that many ChatGPT accounts have been breached by a hacker called the Raccoon. Other malware like Vidar and Redline have also compromised a significant number of ChatGPT accounts.
These hackers collect information like login details, bank card information, browsing history, and more from infected computers. They then send all this data to the hackers who control the malware. This type of malware affects as many computers as possible to gather as much data as they can.
How do you secure your ChatGPT account?
To protect your CHATGPT account from attacks such as these, experts recommend using something called 2-Factor Authentication (2FA). This means you have to provide an extra code to prove it’s really you before you can log in to your ChatGPT account. It might take a bit longer to log in, but it’s an important way to make your account more secure.
