Microsoft is well known for its iconic wallpapers, if you’re like me, you probably thought of the famous Bay Area hill from Windows XP, but we’re exploring a different wallpaper in this article. Did you know that the Windows 10 default wallpaper is a real photo? Not only is it real, but some videos exist showing us how it was made.

Windows 10 is still the most popular operating system in use today, according to stats from Statcounter, so I have to wonder how many people must have seen the Windows 10 default background without knowing it’s a real picture. According to ZDNet, there are around 1.4 Billion Windows users worldwide, and Windows 10 accounts for three-quarters of them. So there are probably a lot of people clueless about the truth of the default wallpaper.

Did you know that there is a video on the Signum Game Studio‘s YouTube channel detailing how the Windows 10 default background was made? Well, here it is.

The video has amassed 300K views over the 8 years it has been live. This is probably why this came as such a surprise to the people I have told about it. 300K out of a potential Billion people is not a large percentage at all.

There’s something about the wallpaper image that looks so synthetic, futuristic, and advanced. Probably to represent a new age of Windows back in 2015 when it first launched. It would not surprise me if Microsoft somehow physically shoots all of the default backgrounds it uses. However, I do have my doubts regarding how they would have shot the Windows 11 background, that has to be a render, right, guys?

Windows 10 is the gift that keeps on giving, and it seems around a Billion people also seem to think so. With that being said, we’ll all be forced over to Windows 11 or beyond sooner or later, as Windows 10 is approaching the end of its support. Yet somehow I feel there’s still more to discover within Windows 10.

Turns out, the Windows 10 default wallpaper is a real photo. The more you know.
