Valve has started selling refurbished Steam Decks for a much lower price than the brand-new models, of course. What you don’t expect when you see the word “refurbished” is to see the words “warranty” and “support” in the same sentence, well Valve offers their Refurbished Steam Decks with the same warranty and support as new units.
Not to be confused with GameStop’s refurbished units, which are NOT refurbished by Valve.
How much cheaper are refurbished Steam Decks?
Valve is currently selling Refurbished Steam decks for a much lower price than the RRP of new units, for obvious reasons. Even if a unit has just been opened and never touched, it is classed as secondhand, and cannot be sold as new.
Currently, the listings for the refurbished Steam Decks are as follows:
- 64 GB model – $319 / £279 (was $399 / £349)
- 256 GB model – $419 / £369 (was $529 / £459)
- 512 GB model – $519 / £459 (was $649 / £569)
That’s an incredible saving, but if you ask me, the real value comes in the level of support Valve has given to these refurbished devices.
Valve Stands by its refurbished Steam Decks
Valve is a fantastic company when it comes to customer support and savings, let’s be honest. So it’s no surprise that Valve is once again raising the bar for companies everywhere selling refurbished goods.
Besides the incredible savings buying a refurbished Steam Deck can bring you, you’re also fully covered as if you’re buying a Steam Deck brand spanking new. Valve States on its refurbished Steam Deck page:
“All refurbished units meet or even exceed the performance standards of new retail units. Although they may have minor cosmetic blemishes, they provide a reliable, high-quality gaming experience at a lower cost.“
as well as this, Valve states in its FAQ section that each refurbished unit receives the same support as a new unit:
“As a customer with a Certified Refurbished unit, you will receive the exact same customer support experience through our support teams as you would with a new unit.”
Each Steam Deck goes through a rigorous testing methodology that includes a good clean, a factory reset, a software update, and an extensive examination that involves over 100 tests. Your refurbished Steam Deck might have one or two minor cosmetic blemishes, but it’ll run and game like a dream.
What’s included with a refurbished Steam Deck?
Apart from the refurbished deck itself, you will receive:
- A full 1-year warranty (unless longer as determined by your country of residence).
- You will also receive a refurbished power supply (which may have minor cosmetic marks),
- Carrying case and Quick Start guide
So, pretty much everything you get with a brand new Steam Deck.
Do you get returns on a refurbished Steam Deck?
Whilst the refurbished Steam Deck page does not specifically state anything about returning the Steam Deck specifically, there are numerous places on the page that state the refurbished units het all the same support as the brand new units.
This doesn’t mean you sure have the right to return your refurbished Steam Deck, but I assume you will be able to.
If there’s any issue with your refurbished Steam Deck, Valve will happily take it back and replace it with another refurbished unit – As stated on the main page.
If you ask me, the real value of these refurbished Steam Decks comes from the warranty and support you get with new units. Valve tests these units to ensure they’re as good as the brand-new units they ship. This is a testament to the level of quality and customer care that Valve promotes and we hope many learn from it.
