The only contenders when it comes to GPUs are Nvidia and AMD. Putting AMD aside for this article, we will be focusing on two entry-level Nvidia products and discussing which one is better.

We will be taking a closer look at the 1660 Super and the 1660 Ti. We will be comparing some key specifications, such as cooling, dimensions, architecture, and VRAM.

Nvidia Background

In 1999, Nvidia revolutionized the gaming world when they invented the first-ever GPU. They were the leaders in the market and paved the way for next-gen gaming.

Being the creators of the GPU, Nvidia is a huge and trusted brand. They set the benchmark for other competitors, such as AMD.

Their processors have been used in Playstations, computers, and gaming PCs for many years. Their products are second to none and when you purchase an Nvidia GPU, you know that it will run well, regardless of its price.

Nvidia GPUs are well respected in the gaming industry and it is clear to see why. They remain a firm favorite for seasoned and professional gamers alike.

Architecture

Unlike a CPU which focuses heavily on cache, a GPU ensures that the threads in the processor are being used. A GPU contains significantly more cores in comparison to a CPU.

Both the 1660 Super and the 1660 ti use Nvidia Turing architecture. The Turing shaders boast a significant improvement over 10 series GPUs.

These shaders are still a fairly new concept and are brilliant for providing better detail. The threads in the GPU are used to create the mesh Turing. This allows the thread mapping to be flexible.

The Turing architecture is efficient and runs with little issues. It makes streaming easy and hassle-free. It contains double the cache in comparison to older GPUs and has 1.4X power efficiency. This is a significant improvement.

The shading technology is adaptive and as the GPU contains twice as much cache, you will have a much better gaming performance.

They are both impressive with their Turing technology. However, having a slightly higher amount of cores, the 1660 Ti will perform better with recently released titles. Even so, the difference will be minimal given that they both use the same architecture.

Cooling

Having a sufficient cooling system with a GPU is important, given how hard it works within your gaming PC.

1660 Super

The 1660 Super uses a Windforce 2X cooling system, with alternate spinning fans that are 90mm.

1660 Ti

The 1660 Ti has a slightly bigger cooling unit in comparison to the 1660 Super with 100mm unique blade fans. It also uses a Windforce 2X cooling system with alternate spinning fans.

Both GPUs are built with overclocking in mind. However, the specs state that the 1660 Super can withstand significant overclocking 4 + 2 power phases. Each GPU will dissipate the heat with ease. But, if you are overclocking, you will need to take the extra heat this generates into consideration.

Dimensions

The dimensions of a GPU are important to consider. You need to ensure you have enough space available.

1660 Super

The dimensions of the 1660ti are as follows:

Both GPUs have the same dimensions. Given this, it does not make an overall difference to your gaming PC which one you choose as long as you have a case capable of fitting either in. The larger the GPU, the bigger heatsink it has to allow it to cool sufficiently.

If you are purchasing an upgrade for your existing GPU, it is worth taking into consideration whether or not your existing cooling system is sufficient and if these GPUs are the correct size.

You need to ensure that the slot placement is correct for your gaming PC as they can vary between makes and models.

Resolution/FPS

Both GPUs have 1440p capabilities, which is great if you are looking to future proof your build.

The frames per second (fps) is what sets these two GPUs apart. While they can both run at 60fps, the 1660 ti is more capable of sustaining this on higher texture settings.

In some instances, the fps for the 1660 Super is slightly higher. Looking at the overall gameplay, the differences in the fps is minimal. For example, when testing gameplay with Final Fantasy XV, the 1660 Super runs at 62fps on ultra, in comparison to the 1660ti, which runs are 66 fps.

When measuring the MRender, the 1660 Super was 112 fps, in comparison to 1660 Ti’s 98.1. The 1660 Super has a 14% better multi rendering speed. However, the effective 3D speed in the 1660 ti was 76.5% when tested in comparison to the 1660 Super’s 71.1%.

Ray Tracing

When playing AAA and detailed games such as MMO, ray tracing is important. It improves the lighting in-game and allows it to become more realistic. Linking with turing is an important part of gaming.

Hardware acceleration in a GPU will improve your gaming experience. Although, Tensor and RT cores in the GPU are more important than having specialized hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

Unfortunately, both of these GPUs lack this feature and do not support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. However, they do use NULL technology, to improve the overall gameplay.

Being entry-level in comparison to Nvidia’s RTX series, this is understandable. If you are looking for a top of the range GPU the RTX series is a suitable alternative. Even so, these GPUs are still capable of creating fantastic graphics overall.

VRAM

The VRAM of your GPU is a critical aspect to consider. The better your overall graphic memory, the better your game will run. To run a game well on 1080p, you need at least 8GB of VRAM.

The memory speed of the 1660 Super is 14Gbps and for 1660 Ti it is 12Gbps. Both GPUs are more than capable of running games smoothly without issues. They perform well above the graphic memory needed to support gaming.

The speed of the 1660 Ti is dropped slightly in comparison to Nvidia’s previous GPU models that were also 14Gbps. They both have a video memory of 6GB GDDR6. The increase in memory speed is beneficial.

The 1660 Ti is the better GPU overall. While the 1660 Super closes the gap between the 1660 and the 1660 Ti models, the 1660 Ti is better.

They are both great in terms of performance, though they do lack ray tracing. However, this is to be expected when choosing a more affordable GPU in this weight category.

Either GPU is a great place to start if you are shopping on a budget. Their overall fps and performance fair well, and there are only minor differences between the two.

Also in today’s market, if you shop around you might just be able to pick up a bargain to give that old PC you have in the corner of the room a half-decent boost.
