Things to consider

It’s important to realize here that you are going to be buying a piece of furniture that will hopefully last you many years, and, more importantly, provide you with a level of comfort while you are sat at your PC, that you might not have previously had. Therefore, before you click Buy, spare a thought for the following.

Price

The cost of gaming chairs can vary quite dramatically. the big-name companies are all going to be charging considerably more for their wares but there is a reason for that. generally, the materials used are of much higher quality, this is how the cheaper manufacturers can trim down their price so much. With this trimming down also comes a reduction in comfort. Extra support cushions aren’t included, the foam used in the seat and back sections won’t be as high quality and may lose its shape quicker than you would like. The seat itself might not recline or even feel as sturdy.

What we are saying, and we certainly don’t always suggest you go for the higher ticket items, but when it comes to gaming chairs you generally get what you pay for. It all depends on how happy you are to compromise.

Style

The last couple of years have definitely seen a move away from the huge gamification of gaming chairs. No longer are we only different bright green chairs with orange lightning bolts emblazoned across them but you can now get high-quality gaming chairs that do not look out of place in any corner of your home. You need to decide whether you want one that’s more akin to a big padded ‘bosses’ office chair or stick with the racing-style so popular in years gone by. It’s also worth considering you may redecorate before your chair reaches the end of its life so that bright yellow racing chair may not fit in so well in the future.

Selection Criteria

Weight Limit

The weight limit on most of these gaming chairs is less of a concern than on a traditional office or computer chair. That’s because these chairs are already based on the floor, and therefore aren’t likely to collapse if they have a sturdy frame.

The only real exceptions to these rules are the Intex Inflatable Chair and the X Rocker Pedestal Chair. The Inflatable Chair is much more strict about its weight limit since it risks popping if you go over it, while the Pedestal in the other chair may give away if you stress it too much for too long.

Besides those chairs, though, you’re probably just fine being 350+ lbs and using these chairs on the floor. They should be reasonably comfortable, too, but you can also check the measurements on them if you’re particularly wide.

Get A Chair That Matches Your Size

Gaming chairs have a height and weight capacity like any other chair.

Most of them can only support up to 250 lbs while some can handle weights of up to 400 lbs. Similarly, some chairs are smaller and can only accommodate heights up to 5’5” while some have high backrests that can support over 6’ in height.

Choose a gaming chair that can at least support 20 lbs more than your current weight. And since it’s unlikely you’ll shoot up another foot anytime soon, just go with a chair that’s close to your height or a little slightly above.

Determine Your Desk Height And Width

One thing many people forget when buying a chair is that it needs to be small enough to fit close to their desk. This means you should have a good idea of just how tall and wide your chair is.

Features

Features are another big thing, but the main one at play here is audio.

For whatever reason, most people expect gaming chairs to have built-in speakers for an immersive gaming audio experience. If this interests you and you don’t mind a few extra steps of setup, you should probably opt into it.

If this doesn’t interest you, though, don’t waste your money. Focus on buying a comfortable chair instead.

In-depth Review

Best in Class

Our fave Vertagear
Vertagear S-Line SL2000 White/Purple

Dimensions 20.9 x 20.5 x 55.1 inches
Sitting Height Up to 495mm
Comfort
4.8/5
Ease of Construction
5/5
Durability
4.2/5
PROS
  • Super-easy assembly
  • Castors run smoothly on any surface
  • Cushion and pillow included
CONS
  • White seats always look grubby in time
  • Very “gamer” in design.

There never used to really be a choice. Gaming chairs were all in this racing style. Then we had the X-rocker type seat before companies such as Secretlab came along and styled things in a slightly different way. Racing style chairs are still extremely popular, however, especially with streamers and the like, and we have to admit, this white offering from Vertagear really catches the eye. Yes, the design is out and out racing but if you like that then the colors blend beautifully.

We particularly like the way the lumbar support and the head pillow are designed to blend in sumptuously with the overall design of the chair. It just looks really good.

It’s also really easy to construct as well, literally just sliding together, so you won’t need to muster a second pair of hands to complete any tricky bits. It has a maximum weight recommendation of 150llbs so if you are on the larger side then a racing-style chair may not be for you. Otherwise, if you are looking for a nice white chair with a splash of extra color in your set-up, as well as one that oozes class and a hint of speed, look no further.

PROS
  • Coffee fiber padding increases hygiene
  • Sturdy
  • Great adjustability
CONS
  • Expensive
  • Looks like an office chair

The first thing I want to talk about here is one that doesn’t;t often get mentioned when talking about gaming chairs – back sweat. Nice yeah. You see not all gaming chairs live in the same part of the world, and you might already know that if you live in more tropical climates you are more suited to getting a fabric chair than a leather/faux leather one as they tend to be cooler. With this tropical heat however comes the aforementioned skin juice, dripping into your expensive seat in the height of summer during a tense COD firefight. Tasty.

Well, Vertagear has gone and patented a technology that fills the backrest and seat with high-quality coffee fiber which enables quick-drying for added hygiene and comfort. Now that all sounds fundamentally disgusting knowing that all this filth is being absorbed into your seat, but there is some satisfaction to be gained if you ever sell it on on eBay.

Another (expensive) novelty for this year is the potential to spend a further $200 or more on an LED light upgrade kit – in fact, you can see it in action on the image at the top of the page. It makes the chair look cool, but you have to have more money than sense really.

Overall though it’s a very good chair. It doesn’t win here as it is a premium price but doesn’t quite hit the premium levels we have come to expect from Secretlab and Anda Seat. It is recommended though, regardless of how wet your back gets.

PROS
  • Well built
  • Simple to construct
  • Feels expensive
CONS
  • Won'd contain larger frames
  • Can be hot in warmer climes
  • Have to like the racing style

We really like the SL2000 model featured at the top of this page here at WePC, and we have recommended it on several previous round-ups on this very site. We like this larger model in the series too. It’s sort of like buying an upgrade pack on a new car, except you don’t get a sat nav here. The reason we ask you to consider it rather than out and out suggesting your buy it is that the price ramps up quite a bit and will therefore have lurched out of quite a lot of budgets, and I’m not quite sure it is justified. It looks pretty similar – you can see the seat looks a bit plusher, but ultimately it’s just a nice racing-style chair.

Like all the Vertagear’s construction is a breeze and the 4D armrests are useful if you want to squash it into an unusual position, but it does cost extra cash. It’s still considerably cheaper than a top-of-the-range model, it’s just – is it worth that much more than our winner here – to you it may be, to us, maybe not.

Final Word

If you are an avid reader of our gaming chair content here at WePC – and let’s face it why wouldn’t you be, you might well have seen our winner here featured on several other pages. One of the things we like the most about the Vertagear’s is their ease of construction and the fact they are pretty comfortable. They do tend to lean towards the racing style of chair so you have to be okay with slotting one of those into your set-up but the fact they go above and beyond in the materials department is of great benefit to them. The expensive runner-up in our round-up features special coffee-fibers to enhance quick drying and it features such as those that show the manufacturer is actually thinking of the end-user, rather than just trying to take them for every penny they can.

Be sure to let us know in the comments which Vertagear chair you plump for.
