During the CS2 announcement, Valve emphasized the significant evolution of the game world. Basically the game is getting more than a facelift, think of it more like a transplant. During the initial announcement we were shown confirmed CS2 maps. Historically, Counter-Strike hasn’t been particularly renowned for its graphics. However, the transition to the Source 2 engine has resulted in a remarkable visual improvements for objects, player models, and of course, maps. Before CS2 releases, map updates will be categorized into three tiers: Touchstone, Upgrades, and Overhaul.
The primary objective of these graphical changes is to enhance the clarity, brightness, and overall quality of both maps and objects, creating a more visually appealing experience.
CS2 maps confirmed
So far the confirmed maps are as follows, first up we have the main maps:
- Dust II – The sequel to Dust, Considered to be the godfather of maps since its conception and appears on almost any game with modding tools.
- Mirage – A fan favorite thanks o its ruthless deathmatch-style gunplay. Was initially a CS 1.6 map that over time made its way to CSS and eventually CSGO.
- Train – This map has changed a lot over the years and no longer sits in the active duty pool, however, it is easily one of the best in the game.
- Nuke – Nuke is a stalwart, sometimes considered to be “Marmite” because everyone either absolutely loves it or straight up bans it.
- Overpass – A fairly old map now, Overpass was once the poster boy for how good a new map can be. Overpass still remains one of the more unique out there and is classified as an overhaul map for CS2.
- Inferno – Inferno and its bottlenecks somehow never get old, it’s a classic (most are). Inferno is also classified as an overhaul map and made its first appearance in CS 1.1! The map has changed a hell of a lot since then.
- Ancient – One of the newer maps to appear on the scene that was initially shunned, however, has come into its own in the competitive sphere. This map is classed as an “upgrade map”
Then we have the additional casual maps:
- Tuscan
- Italy
- Baggage
- Shoots
- Office
- Canals
- Lake
- Shortdust
Current CS2 limited test map list:
- Dust 2
- Mirage
- Nuke
- Office
While playing Office, many noticed a small Easter egg of a painting of the map De_Inferno, however, it looks all nice, new and shiny. This gave us a glimpse at what’s to come and we have to say it looked magnificent. More map news and rumors came from Valves recent Twitter banner change, showing a multicolored dragon. It was clear to many this represented the graffiti in Overpass (playground), however others pointed out that it could also be Cobble. Regardless, the next map in the playtest is bound to be one of these.
CS2 map overhauls
Valve is introducing a map categorization system in CS2, which comprises of three distinct categories: upgrade, overhaul, and touchstone. The type of map, whether it is a new addition or an existing one, will vary depending on which category it belongs to. As a result, players can expect different levels of modifications and changes on each map, depending on their categorization.
CS2 Touchstone maps
Classic maps from CSGO with a solid foundation are going to receive lighting and character read improvements, Dust 2 is one of these.
CS2 Overhaul maps
There are a few maps from CSGO set to receive a full revamp from the ground up. This will put the new Source 2 engine tools fully to work, bringing these maps into 2023 with a bang.
CS2 Upgrade maps
Some of the maps listed above are receiving an upgrade, with Source 2 lighting, a physically based rendering system, and reflections all being upgraded. This means lighting and objects in general will look a lot more realistic than ever before. There have been many projected improvements to CS2, including engine upgrades and a massive change to how CS2 smokes behave.
