Wondering what the difference is between CS2’s ranked modes, Premier vs Competitive? Counter-Strike 2’s most popular ranked modes can seem difficult to tell apart if you don’t know what they are.

Competitive modes have always been a staple of the Counter-Strike series, and CS2 is no different. There are tons of ways to dive into ranked mode and make your way to the top of the global leaderboards. But, what is the difference between Premier Mode and Competitive Mode? We’re here to let you know.

What’s the difference between Premier vs Competitive in CS2?

There are three key differences between the Premier Mode and Competitive Mode in CS2:

  • The map selection process
  • The CS rating/ranks
  • The possibility of overtime

Let’s break these down.

The map selection process for Premier differs from Competitive greatly. While in Competitive, players can queue into matchmaking for the maps they want to play, Premier doesn’t have this. In Premier, you’ll go pick maps you wish to ban from a map pool with your team and keep going back and forth until both teams have narrowed it down to one map. It follows a majority rules pick and ban system until the most popular map is played.

When looking at Premier vs. Competitive, the rating system is also different. In Premier, you’ll use the new CS rating system where you can see your ELO as you win and lose games. You will also get rated on each individual map. However, in Competitive, the classic CS:GO ranks are used for the ranking system, like Global Elite.

Finally, whether you end up in overtime is a big difference between the modes. While overtime is possible in Premier Mode to avoid ties, in Competitive Mode, there is no possibility of overtime.

How are Premier and Competitive the same in CS2?

Once you learn the differences between both modes, you’ll find that they are very similar past them. These are the top ranked modes CS2 has to offer in its catalogue of game modes. Both are perfect for competitive players looking to get a rank in the game and make their way up to the best rating. You’ll go through placement matches, and work your way up to a higher rating. While it’s helpful to have the best CPU for CS2 to play, your skill is what truly matters.

There’s plenty more than just ranked modes in Valve’s latest addition to the CS series, but Premier and Competitive are truly the bread and butter.
