Although many fans are still confused about if Legends of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is a sequel or a prequel to Breath of the Wild. Many more fans interested in getting into the franchise are wondering if they need to go back and play Breath of the Wild.
Regardless of where Zelda TOTK falls in the timeline, it shares the same world as BOTW. This makes many fans think they need to play BOTW to fully understand everything in Zelda TOTK. Let’s go over if you need to play BOTW to fully understand Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Do You Need To Play BOTW Before You Play Zelda TotK?
The short answer is, No. There is no mandatory playthrough of Breath of the Wild needed to get into Tears of the Kingdom.
Although we don’t know what the story of Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be at the moment. Playing through Breath of the Wild will give you the best chance at knowing what is going on.
You have to keep in mind that you will be jumping into the middle of the story of this Hyrule Kingdom. While there will be parts you could miss without playing BOTW, it is doubtful that no context will be given at all.
If you do have the time, you should go ahead and play through Breath of the Wild before the release of Tears of the Kingdom so you will be fully caught up and can catch all the references between games.
There could also be some bonuses that you get for having a completed Breath of the Wild save file on your Switch. This is not unheard of as many of the Pokemon games have a similar feature as of late.
