Can a Steam Deck run EA Sports FC 24?
In short, a Steam Deck likely will not be able to run EA Sports FC 24. Valve Steam Deck is the official console of Steam, the gaming service. Technically speaking, all Steam games can be run on the console. Everything from Red Dead Redemption 2 to Madden 22 can run. However, a lot of EA games recently lost their Steam Deck Verified label. Mass Effect, Battlefield V, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, Titanfall 2, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered, The Sims 4, Madden NFL 22, Need for Speed Heat, and most other EA sports games.
That happened with Madden 24 that just came out, and it’s not available on Steam Deck presently without using workarounds and fixes, such as the proton experimental tag, using Linux, or the EA App. The same very well could be true of EA FC 24, though they are different games. Windows has Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, which fools the system into thinking it can run these games. That likely won’t work for FC 24 at game launch.
It is possible, it just can’t be determined until someone gets the game on September 8 and tries to run it on their console. Regardless, that’s not to say it will run as well as it could otherwise as compatibility issues may arise with older devices or bigger, newer games. The Steam Deck is not the most powerful console out there. Much like its handheld counterpart the Nintendo Switch, the console is lacking in some areas.
The game might be playable, but it might not be as smooth. Furthermore, it is not considered a next-gen console like an Xbox Series S or a PlayStation 5. If you pre-ordered the individual game for Steam thinking it would be on Steam Deck and it’s not, you can submit a refund request.
That means that it won’t have cross-play. Steam Deck users will be restricted from playing with other gamers on the service. Steam has plans to make a better Deck in the future and give it a significant boost in horsepower, but that day has not yet come. All of this is if the game is available, which may only be possible through concerning workarounds. Pre-ordering the Ultimate Edition grants early access, so you can see if it’s available then.
