Final Fantasy has evolved over the years but one mechanic has always been consistent, and that is the party system. Square Enix has included a party system in a majority of the Final Fantasy games over the years. This system allows you to fight alongside party members and companions, controlling each character.

The combat of Final Fantasy 16 is different than in past games. Protagonist Clive Rosfield is not your standard leader and is far different than Final Fantasy 15’s Noctis. Does Final Fantasy 16 have a party system or is Clive going it alone?

Is there a party system in Final Fantasy 16?

Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 16 does not have a party system. At least, it doesn’t have a traditional party system. Instead of controlling a party, you will only control Clive during the game. He will be accompanied by AI companions though.

The AI companions that will accompany you throughout different parts of the game will trade banter with Clive and offer support by using standard attacks and magic. Many of Clive’s battles that have been seen bring in his companion Torgal – a dog that Clive has had since he was a child.

You won’t have direct control over other characters including Torgal. You will be able to issue commands during the real-time combat portions of the game.

Producer Naoki Yoshida had an interview where he spoke about changes made to the game. During this interview, he spoke about whether or not the game is open-world and why the developers decided to steer away from turn-based combat. This info is very helpful and a good reminder that not all Final Fantasy games are the same.

The newest trailer for the game showed off some of the combat you can expect. To get a better feel for it, you can try out the demo on PlayStation and see for yourself how good a character Clive is.
