One of the most popular games, Fortnite from Epic Games has been the talk of the gaming world for quite some time now, with its battle royale mode, seasonal updates, and dedicated community. A new season, Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3, has brought Fortnite back to the forefront, and if you have a kid wanting to join in the action, you might be wondering what the age rating is for the free-to-play shooter Fortnite. Is it safe for kids? Don’t worry, we’re here to let you know.

What is Fortnite’s age rating?

The game Fortnite is rated T for Teens and this is for the following elements:

  • Violence
  • Interactive Elements, including in-game purchases and user interaction

T for teens indicates the game is recommended for ages 13 and up. This doesn’t mean that kids under 13 aren’t allowed to play the game, but rather is just the recommended age per the ESRB.

Violence is a bit central to the video game, as the gameplay revolves around players shooting each other for victory in the battle royale mode. They will have access to plenty of guns and melee weapons, including axes, lightsabers, and swords.

Interactive elements like user interaction mean the game’s chat features, including voice chat. This voice chat could be strangers who are swearing or cursing, and it’s not uncommon for public voice chats to encourage bullying. In-game purchases are also plentiful, like the battle pass system purchased with V-bucks, so the game will be asking for players to buy things like outfits and weapons.

Is Fortnite safe for kids?

Fortnite can be safe for children. There is no blood or gore present in the game, as the graphics are cartoon-style, and voice chat is able to be disabled. The game is meant to be whimsical and comical most of the time, however, it is still fantasy violence, with explosions and violence abound.

The factors that should go into deciding whether you are ok with your child playing the game is whether you are ok with them having guns in-game and shooting at other players.

Fortnite is very popular with children, so it’s not unusual for kids to form teams together and play with their friends. It’s a great way for kids to play with their friends, even those who they aren’t close enough to see in person.

Only you can make the decision whether your child is mature enough to handle the content in Fortnite, so as long as you know your kid and what they can and cannot handle, and you’ve done your research, you should be able to make an informed, safe decision.

What is Fortnite’s ESRB rating?

Fortnite is rated T for Teens by the ESRB, for violence and user interaction.

Is Fortnite safe for kids?

An informed parent or guardian is the only one who can know for sure if the game is safe for their own child, but no blood or gore being present in the game and a community of younger players means the game is relatively safe for kids.
