While players expect a bit of downtime on Tuesday’s server reset for Destiny 2, it normally doesn’t last for more than a few minutes. Unless it is otherwise stated ahead of time by the maintenance team at Bungie. Sometimes though, something can go wrong during maintenance and the servers are kept offline for longer than normal. Let’s go over if the Destiny 2 servers are down and when they will come back up.

Are Destiny 2 Servers Down?

When players went to go log back on after the normal maintenance time, they were greeted by various error codes like Weasel. Players quickly figured out something might be going on and took to social media to find the cause. According to the official Bungie Help Twitter account, the regular maintenance time has been extended until 1 PM PDT.

For many players, this sends up some warning flags as the last time this happened the servers were down for much longer than expected. Each time the maintenance time kept getting extended until they were finally able to get the servers back up.

The main concern of many players is that they have no clue what is happening with the servers. Bungie has stopped being as transparent about what is going on behind the scenes. While this is not normally an issue when it comes to future plans with the game, it can be quite concerning when it comes to these server errors.

We will never really know what is causing these server errors but many players believe it to be Destiny 2’s engine showing its age. Since the game is built on the same engine that the original Destiny was on, it is quite old at this point. This is the same reason we have content vaulting as the engine is unable to handle all of the content that is added to the game.

Whatever the cause of the current server outage, these repeated issues are a sign that it might be time for Destiny 2 to move on to another engine. We could expect to see the release of Destiny 3 once we reach the Final Shape expansion.
