Minecraft is a wonderfully imaginative game where the creative possibilities are endless. This is thanks to the in-game materials that it provides. Each Minecraft block is unique and offers players a resource in which to build and craft other various objects and items.

Blocks are placeable items within the world. By selecting the block you wish to use in your UI and right-clicking where you would like it to go, you can place a block. The environment within Minecraft is entirely made up of these blocks. We will explore the various block types that are available to make and use within this beautiful world.

How Many Blocks Are In Minecraft?

With more Blocks being added with every Minecraft update, there are now hundreds of unique building blocks in the game. In fact, a look at the Creative Inventory will tell you that there are 391 building blocks… and that’s just limited to full blocks, stairs and slabs. When you include items, natural materials, weapons, armor and more, that number goes way up! This number does include Bedrock and Reinforced Deepslate, though, which cannot be broken or obtained naturally in survival mode.

As of 1.19, there are 391 creative “Building Blocks” in Minecraft.
How many Minecraft Building Blocks

Minecraft prides itself on being a game that is never stale, with creators constantly providing updates with new game material to be explored by its millions of daily players. As such, there are many types of blocks, most of which have their own variations. For example, there are nine main types of wood: Oak, Dark Oak, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Spruce, Mangrove, and Crimson and Warped, with the latter two only found in the Nether. These types of wood then each have logs, stripped logs, planks and more variations skyrocketing the total number of blocks that are in Minecraft.

Originally, Minecraft had only 30 blocks to work with. Since the release, this number has only increased and with its continuing success, it will surely increase even further.

How many blocks make up The Overworld?

In older editions of the game, there were limitations to the size of the world, even choices depending on how large you wanted your Minecraft world. In current Java and Bedrock Editions of the game, however, the world border is instead located at a massive +/- 29,999,984, meaning that (without teleportation) it is very unlikely you’ll ever see the end of your world. If you do, you’ll be greeted with a transparent border preventing you from going any further.

With a new world height in Minecraft 1.18 of 384 (between -64 and 319), there are literally trillions of blocks making up your Minecraft world!

Breaking it down a little to make things more digestible, a Minecraft world is made up of what is referred to as “chunks”. Each Minecraft chunk is 16 blocks by 16 blocks, so itself is made up of 98,304 blocks from top to bottom (including air and water).

How many blocks make up The Nether?

The Nether is actually eight times smaller than the Overworld, bringing it’s own set of challenges when portalling between the two. This difference in size means that one Overworld block is the equivalent to eight in The Nether, and this must be taken into account when travelling between the two. However, this does mean you can travel further, faster by using The Nether!

For example, if you wanted to travel 7,000 blocks in the Overworld, it would take a long time. Instead, build a Nether Portal at the start, head inside, and travel just 875 blocks in The Nether. Build another Nether Portal, head on through, and you’ll find yourself 7,000 blocks away from your first portal! In Java Edition, this will also earn you the “Subspace Bubble” Advancement for using The Nether to travel at least 7km (7,000 blocks) in the Overworld.

Digging Down To Bedrock

Bedrock is a block that is not mineable in survival mode. The purpose of bedrock is to prevent players from entering the Void. It acts as an impenetrable barrier at the bottom of the Overworld and Nether.

It is possible to dig down to Bedrock in survival mode, but it is not recommended that a player digs straight down. If players dig straight down beneath themselves they may find that they fall into lava – and that would definitely be unfortunate! Instead, the safest way to dig straight down is to mine two horizontal blocks at a time, so you always have one to stand on while you mine the other… and you can avoid that lava if you find any!

If, for some reason, you wish to dig through Bedrock, you can do so in Creative mode, and enter the Void!

Minecraft Block Types

As mentioned, there are hundreds of blocks and items in Minecraft, each with its own set of uses and abilities. Some blocks are transparent and some are opaque. Some blocks fill the entire grid square and others only fill it partially.

There are some blocks that come with their own particular rules for use making them have special properties and functions. You can also make weapons using resources such as wood, stone, iron and diamond.

Here are just some of the different types of blocks that can be found in Minecraft.

Wood Blocks

These blocks are of course made from wood. They are flammable and will be destroyed if they come into contact with fire or lava. To mine these efficiently, players should use an axe.

There are nine types of wood since Mangrove wood was added in The Wild Update. Again, these are Oak, Dark Oak, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Spruce, Mangrove, Crimson and Warped.

Every type of wood can be crafted into Wooden Planks, Fence, Fence Gate, Stairs, Door, Trapdoor, Slab, Log, Stripped Log, Wood, Stripped Wood, Sign, Boat, Boat with a Chest, Button and Pressure Plate. They also all have their own Sapling and Leaves – apart from Nether wood, which doesn’t have leaves and grown from smaller fungi, and Mangrove, which has a Propagule instead of a sapling.

Other blocks crafted from wood include: Bookshelf, Campfire, Cartography Table, Chest, Composter, Crafting Table, Ladder, Lectern, Loom, Note Block, Scaffolding, Smithing Table and Campfire.

Stone Blocks

Blocks made out of stone are typically fire-resistant, they also have high blast resistance. These blocks are great for building structures that you do not want to be destroyed.

To mine stone blocks efficiently, players should use a pickaxe.

Similarly to wood, stone blocks all have their own variants and types. The main types of stone are: Blackstone, Brick, Cobblestone, and Deepslate. These can also all be crafted into numerous items, such as Stairs, Slabs, Walls, Buttons and more.

Environmental Blocks

These are blocks that make up the environment within a Minecraft world. They have their own unique properties and uses and are very to mine if players wish to. There are hundreds of environmental blocks in Minecraft including Dirt Blocks, Water sources, flowing Water, Clay blocks, Vines, Sand and many more.

Redstone Blocks

Redstone blocks are components that are used in redstone devices and contraptions in a Minecraft world.

These blocks include Activator Rail, Redstone Block, Detector Rail, Dispenser, Dropper, Lever, Observer, Piston, Powered Rail, Redstone Lamp, and more.

Decorative Blocks

These blocks are used to decorate areas and for making your builds really stand out. Decorative blocks can be types of furniture that are made by the player in some way, or unique, colorful blocks.

There are hundreds of different decorative blocks. These include items such as Bookshelves, Glass Panes, Glazed Terracotta, Glass Blocks  and even Pumpkins. You will also find dyes in this category. Here are a few examples.

Miscellaneous Blocks

These blocks are unique and offer their own special properties and functions. They are typically obtained through individual and unique means, or in dangerous places. These special items include mob heads, the Dragon Egg, Dried Kelp, Enchanting Table, End Portal Frame, Ender Chest and many more.

Here are a few special miscellaneous blocks. You will also find various potions and enchantments as part of the miscellaneous blocks’ category.

Even though Minecraft was released with a selection of only 30 block types, the game has grown significantly over the years, we can now find hundreds of block types throughout the Minecraft world ready to experiment and create with. All in all, the amount of individual blocks in an overworld can vary depending on the size of the world created. You may find that your overworld has over nine million blocks.

With the updates ever-changing and adding to this marvellous world of adventure, we can predict that there will be plenty more exciting block types to come.
