The latest iteration of the legendary Mortal Kombat series is finally here with unexpected twists, original backstories and new playable characters. Mortal Kombat 1 contains all of the gameplay possibilities fans love while introducing more to the franchise with some RPG aspects. No, luckily, you do not need to be online to play Mortal Kombat 1. While some game modes require an internet connection to play them, such as online multiplayer, you do not need to be connected for all game modes and gameplay. This information has been confirmed by NetherRealm Studios on the FAQs for Mortal Kombat 1.

What game modes require internet in Mortal Kombat 1?

Mortal Kombat 1 has multiple game modes, including the Kampaign, which will have Story, Invasion, and Tower modes. Story mode and Tower modes do not require an internet connection. However, you will need an internet connection to play Invasions.

It will also have multiplayer modes. In this mode, you can play the Local, Online mode, or in a Tournament. When playing locally, all you need are two controllers to match against your friend. As for Online and Tournaments, you will need an internet connection.

Along with the internet connection, you will also need a subscription to the online membership services for the following platforms:

  • PlayStation Plus
  • Xbox Live Gold
  • Nintendo Switch Online

In order to play the online modes.

There’s plenty to enjoy both online and offline for Mortal Kombat 1, from all your favorite playable characters including Scorpion, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Shang Tsung, Mileena, Raiden, Kitana, and plenty more in the main roster.
