Be careful what you wish for. Modern Warfare 2 players have long pleaded for a night vision map on the game – and their prayers were finally answered when Activision and co. added Black Gold – a nighttime map set in parts of the Rohan Oil refinery.

On paper, it sounds fun. You’re equipped with night vision goggles, thermal optics and you’re treated to that rather wonderful night-vision effect you see in the campaign. It’s part of what the Call of Duty team are calling the new Night Operations content… but they may want to rethink this.

That’s because it’s already being complained about by the community, who are complaining about the lasers and are questioning whether or not it actually works as a multiplayer mode.

“I like the map, just wish we could disable the lasers. Maybe put it in as a daytime map too,” one write on the MW2-sub Reddit. Another wrote: “I enjoyed it. But my friends didn’t seem to enjoy it sadly.”

So, why is going down so badly. One suggestion is that it’s because the night itself is not balanced. In other words, there is no real strategic advantage to wearing NVGs. This is compounded by the fact that players are using flashlights that essentially blinds those using googles. The mode seems to hav a few game-changing issues that need to be addressed if another Night Op is to come along.

Elsewhere, as one user writes, the lasers are pretty distracting: “I like the map, just wish we could disable the lasers. Maybe put it in as a daytime map too.”

A day-time version of this map could well be an easy win, and would certainly be a welcome addition to the growing MW2 map list. Time will tell if this happens, but here’s hoping it does in Season 3 Reloaded.
