When you think of your first gaming PC, nothing stands up to this RTX 4090 build by 16-year-old u/DavidGusev123 on Reddit. Although claiming to look for the best PC for the cheapest price, we’re not quite sure whacking in the flagship RTX 40 series card is the way to do that.

The Reddit post on the r/pcmasterrace subreddit has certainly sparked some conversation about how a 16-year-old even gets that kind of money, and if the build they chose is actually a good value. Definitely opting for the best GPU out there is one way of getting the best performance, but at the price it is a hard sell, especially considering it’s not the cheap model in the ROG Strix as we found in our 4090 review.

Specs and reaction

Posted on Sunday 10th of March, the post as of writing has nearly 5K upvotes with nearly 1,000 comments under it. All coming from the user, who claims to be a 16-year-old, posting their components and final PC build. u/DavidGusev 123 claimed the goal was “best pc at the cheapest price without sacrificing performance and this was the result”. So let’s see what that nets you:

  • CPU: AMD RYzen 7800X3D
  • CPU cooler: Deepcool LS720 SE
  • GPU: ASUS ROG Strix RTX 4090
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 6000MHz CL36 32GB
  • PSU: MSI A1000G PCIe 5
  • MOBO: ASUS TUF Gaming X670E WiFi
  • Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD
  • Case: Fractal Meshify 2
  • Monitor: Ultragear 27gn800p-b
  • UPS: Cyberpower UT2200EG

The total comes in at around €3,600 or around $3,940. Now that’s quite the build for a first-timer and only at 16. Our personal first choice came to under £1,500 featuring a GTX 1070 and i5-7600K. With that, plenty of Redditors have some things to say.

Plenty of users under the post have been wondering how someone at 16 managed to afford such an expensive build. Many suggested that OP got most of the money from their parents or elsewhere. Others question the build specs considering the goal of the build overall. They certainly will not lack any performance or power for quite a while.

Replying to one of the comment threads, the OP did clarify that they did work to get this money. Selling off their prebuilt, they got around €500 and then worked part-time to make up the rest. Plus without rent and bills, they got the money a lot faster than some might expect. Sometimes it’s best not to judge and see what they have to say without making a rash decision, but still, we question the 4090, and maybe a 4080 Super might have been a bit more appropriate.
