With the 14th gen officially launching yesterday, consumers first looked at the less-than-optimal performance of the 14th generation Intel CPUs. Reviews slammed Intel’s new generation relentlessly for being too similar to the 13th generation that came before them.
However, a surprise emerged from the 14th-generation reviews, amidst 14th-generation disappointments, the 5800X3D still reigns supreme, which is a surprise, considering its age and limitations.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is still a fantastic CPU compared to the 14th gen
You may be surprised to know that in some cases, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can outperform 13th and 14th gen CPUs. These situations are pretty much all gaming-related, but if you don’t care about anything else, this is great news for you.
Referring to some screenshots taken from Gamer’s Nexus’ review of the 14700K, we can see the 5800X3D outperforming the 14700K in a few games, which is baffling considering it’s on the AM4 platform and stuck on DDR4 memory.
This performance uplift is largely thanks to the X3D component of the 5800X3D, which allows the game to utilize 3D stacked cache memory that is faster and larger. The implementation of 3D V-cache facilitates better performance in games that can utilize it properly, however, it does have its drawbacks.
The 5800X3D was the first implementation of a 3D V-cache on a CPU ever, which meant that the CPU was very limited outside of gaming workloads thanks to a volatile 3D V-cache limiting the clock speed and OC capabilities of the CPU.
We can observe this in the 7zip compression test that Gamers Nexus conducted.
As you can see, the 5800X3D is far down the list, thanks to the limited core speeds and non-existent overclocking support, the 5800X3D isn’t competitive outside of games.
The 5800X3D is still impressive compared to the 14th gen
We’re not saying you should run out and refund your 14th gen CPU for a 5800X, we simply wanted to outline how good and innovative the 5800X3D was. It’s stuck on AM4, runs on the DDR4 memory standard, has a severely limited core speed, and cannot be overclocked. Yet, the 5800X3D still beats the 14th gen in a big way, even if it is in a handful of games.
The 5800X3D CPU really is the little CPU that could.
