With the imminent arrival of Nvidia’s shiny new RTX 4070 Super, we say goodbye to one our favourite cards at WePC HQ… the RTX 4070. We simply loved this card when it came out, and our GPU expert Seb reviewed it extensively in his RTX 4070 review. But as one door closes, another opens, especially those using 30 Series cards who have been waiting patiently for a chance to upgrade to the latest versions.

Awarding the card a formidable four out of five stars, Seb went on to conclude: “The RTX 4070 offers far better value in the lineup – giving you greater overall performance at 1440p. It is close to that 4k mark but doesn’t quite reach it, plus the VRAM capacity does only reach 12GB and we might expect a bit more at this level.”

In short… this card is a perfect sidekick for those wanting a fantastic 1440p experience. To make it even more appealing, thanks to the 4070 Super’s arrival, we are predicting yet another drop in price. Let’s take a closer look at what the data says.

Will RTX 4070 go down in price?

We certainly think it could. Just look at the data. The 70 variant of each generation seems to be more sensitive to price drops compared with the 80 or 90 versions of the same Gen card – at least that is what some of the data from camelcamelcamel.com suggests. Take a look at the below, which shows the average price of the RTX 4070 on Amazon across a period of around 10 months. You can see a steep decline from back in April / May 2023, when it launched, with the card now sitting at around £500 or $600.

When compared with the RRP of the RTX 4070 Super, opting for the non Super variant makes little sense. However, when you look at the generation before, the RTX 3070, you can see the price continues to fall, with what appears to be a compound effect when the new cards are launched. Bear in mind, Nvidia’s 3070 started at around £950 when it launched, and can now be picked up for around 30% of that price. You can also see in the graph that there was a steady trend of decline after the 4070 was released in April 2023. While there are a few fluctuations, there is a definite decrease across the months post launch.

This can give us hope that if you’re looking to grab a 4070, there may be a period after launch where you can get one for a lot cheaper thanks to the newer cards launching. While its impossible to predict exactly what will happen, there certainly seems to be a window of opportunity opening for those using 30 Series cards who have been looking for an excuse to upgrade.
