Fortnite’s future is revealed as Epic Games CEO addresses company layoffs

On September 28, many employees at Epic Games received devastating news from the company’s CEO, Tim Sweeney. In an official email from Tim Sweeney to Epic Games employees, he addresses the 16% layoffs. These layoffs will affect about 830 employees.

In the email, Sweeney states the company has “been spending way more than we earn, investing in the next evolution of Epic and growing Fortnite.” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney also states that while he had been optimistic about powering through this transition without occurring layoffs, it was ultimately unrealistic. Sweeney also emphasizes that while Fortnite begins to grow once more, it is driven by Creator content. Unfortunately, it is at a lower margin than when the Fortnite Battle Royale took off.

The Epic Games CEO also states, “Saying goodbye to people who have helped build Epic is a terrible experience for all.” As a result, “we’re offering a severance package that includes six months base pay.”

Further on within the email, Sweeney addresses the employees who remain at Epic, stating that those still in the company will hear from their senior leaders about the path forward. He also says that while cutting costs, they will continue moving forward with their “ambitious plans.” Additionally, while some of their projects will land on schedule, some may “not ship when planned because they are under-resourced for the time being.”
