Google has been switching it up to try and build a more sustainable future, something we are now starting to see from their latest consumer products.
Google set itself a goal to hit net zero emissions by 2030 across all of its operations and value chain, which includes consumer hardware.
Their design approach has shifted over the years, with the brand considering environmental impact at every stage across its communities and supply chains.
For emissions that power its data centers and offices, Google plans to be operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030 too.
How is Google going to achieve this?
As you can imagine this requires a lot of refining for manufacturing and the science behind materials too.
Google wants to reuse finite resources across its operations, products, and supply chains.
Google’s design team wants their consumer products to reflect this, meaning they need to work closely with engineers to meet the overall goal.
To ensure that longevity is not compromised on products, the design team and the engineers work together to create new ways to incorporate recycled plastic, metals, fabrics, and glass.

Google’s Pixel 7 phone feature an aluminum enclosure, which is made with 100% recycled content, reducing the overall enclosure’s carbon footprint by over 35%.
The Pixel watch’s case is made from 80% recycled stainless steel and the fabric on the stretch band is made from yarns that are 100% recycled material.
Elsewhere, Google is laying down water commitments, stating they plan to replenish 120% of the water they consume by 2030.
Google is also actively supporting water security and ecosystems in the areas they operate.
