Intel has just dropped the 14th generation of CPUs fresh out of the oven, coming in at a tastily consistent price to the 13th-generation CPUs. This is all well and good, of course, but it’s when you realize that the 14th gen CPUs are essentially binned 13th gen CPUs, that the taste becomes bitter. If Intel’s 14th Gen has made us realize one thing, it’s that we want the 15th Gen.

But that’s okay! It’s pretty clear that the 14th gen is just to bridge the gap to the 15th gen, the true prize. Though it’s likely the 15th gen will not be happening for another year, at least. However, if you’re interested in exactly how the 14600K and the 14900K performed, you can see our reviews here.

Even people on the 9th gen passed on the 14th gen CPUs

In a recent Reddit poll, someone asked what their plans for the 14th-gen CPU launch were, and there were many responses to that question. But the ones that stood out the most were the people on the 9th-generation CPUs passing on buying the 14th-gen, in favor of the 15th-generation.

A user by the name of Patient-Anything6171 replied:

Running an i7 9700k, trying to hold off for 15th gen + Nvidia 5xxx! I’ve read that the LGA1851 socket will support additional PCIe 5.0 interfaces other than just the x16 slot which would be nice

Another user by the name of gregDev55 had this to say:

Same boat, waiting for 15000 while currently having a 9700K.”

It seems as though people with 5-year-old processors would rather stick to the lower performance than shell out for a 14th-generation CPU. If that doesn’t say something then we don’t know what will.

Why are some disappointed by the 14th gen?

It’s not like the 14th gen is bad, It’s the fact that we’re conditioned to expect more and more. With AMD and Intel trying to constantly one-up each other, it’s a great environment to breed innovation. But now that Intel has a pretty big lead on AMD in terms of CPU performance, Intel can take a breather, so to speak, and focus on the real innovation, the 15th generation on that shiny new socket.

Intel 14th gen was supposed to be something to bridge the gap, to keep the consumers busy, rather than just have a 1-year absence. Maybe Meteor Lake was supposed to span the desktop processors too, but Intel scrapped that idea to work on Alder Lake longer. Who knows, but that confusion earlier this year didn’t come from nowhere.

Should you buy a 14th-generation processor? If you want to, we’re not here to tell you what you can and can’t like, but we are going to tell you what we think. Unless you’re on a processor your nan recognizes, we’d say go for a 13th-generation and overclock it.

The 14th gen is, after all, overclocked 13th gen. 13th gen prices should drop a fair chunk after the release of the 14th gen.
