We investigate the GitHub server status and answer the question: is GitHub down? The service is highly popular and integral to the workflow of many programmers and software development teams across the world.

GitHub, the popular cloud-based developer hosting service can sometimes go down, leaving those looking to plug in and start uploading some code with a few issues. As it stands, GitHub is having issues, and looks as though it is still experiencing some problems. A real pain when relying on version control to share your work with others.

Is GitHub down right now?

According to the GitHub Status page, they have been experiencing some problems on May 9th, 2023. Luckily though, the majority of their services are back to fully operating as intended. There are still some problems here and there though which may disrupt your workflow. The outage spiked around midday GMT+1, with over 400 user reports highlighting the issue on Downdetector.

Now that most of the services are back up and running, the GitHub team will be doing their best to maintain them. This could also mean ironing out any further problems or outages. The services which were affected the most are as follows:

  • Git Operations
  • Issues
  • Actions
  • Pages
  • Pull Requests
  • Codespaces
  • API Requests
  • Webhooks

Which GitHub services are down?

GitHub operates a number of different services which make up the platform. These are split into a number of categories and operate together. This means that if one service goes down, it doesn’t mean it will necessary mean the end for the rest of them. They are closely related though, so it’s common to see problems arise on multiple services at the same time.

At the time of writing (May 9th 2023, 14:40 GMT+1), multiple services are still experiencing ‘degraded’ operations. Right now, that includes the list below.

  • Git Operations
  • Pull Requests

The remainder of the services are working as normal, and we expect these final two to be fixed up relatively soon. Be sure to check out the aforementioned GitHub Status page for a current status on any of these services.
