Reddit user’s 7800X3D explodes: AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series are the best in the business when it comes to efficient and powerful performance. But it would seem that this Reddit user’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D pushed itself a little too far in the performance department.

A Reddit user by the name of u/Speedrookie shared an incredibly heartbreaking image on Reddit following what could only be described as an utter disaster.

Ryzen 7 7800X3D melts itself and the motherboard

Speedrookie’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D appears to have literally exploded internally, causing the contacts on the bottom of the CPU to heat immensely and bulge, resulting in irreparable CPU and motherboard socket damage.

As you can see by the image, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has expanded in two places, one huge bulge can be observed on the right side of the CPU, and a smaller one on the left. It appears to be the smaller bulge that did all the damage, however.

Reddit user’s 7800X3D explodes: What caused the Ryzen 7 7800X3D to fail so badly?

According to Speedrookie, The PC had been running with the 7800X3D since mid-February and running 24/7 since the date of purchase, with no CPU overclock. The only thing in the system that was overclocked was the memory on EXPO.

Seems like a pretty normal routine until you read the “running 24/7 since the date of purchase” It’s not like CPUs aren’t designed to run 24/7 but we wouldn’t recommend it, however, it certainly would not cause a CPU to explode in a mere 2 months – even if it was close to full load the entire time. Fortunately, Speedrookie confirmed he did game on it, but a lot of the Systems on time were idling down time.

So what happened? Something in the 7800X3D obviously got way too hot and expanded beyond what it should, causing major bulging and irreparable damage to the CPU and motherboard. Since the thermal throttling and or a system shutdown should occur when temps rise too high, it’s clear that something went very wrong here.

It is unknown whether Speedrookie disabled these system safety measures, but since he mentioned the CPU was not overclocked, it’s hard to imagine why he’d need to disable these safety features.

The problem might not lie in the CPU either, the motherboard was an ROG STRIX X670-E, which could have easily pushed enough power to cause a major surge and this level of CPU melting damage. But we’ll never know, this is just speculation.

Final word

Thankfully, both AMD and ASUS have agreed to RMA both the CPU and motherboard at no cost, Interestingly enough, enabling AMD EXPO voids your CPU’s warranty, according to ASUS, so if you want to run your memory in EXPO, do so with caution. It is not known whether EXPO was the cause, but at least it’s a happy ending this time.

If you can afford to, please turn off your PC when you’re not using it, this could have easily been a house fire, thankfully nobody was injured. We hope you enjoyed this Reddit user’s 7800X3D explodes article.
