Apple announced a great deal regarding iOS 17 at the recent WWDC 2023, but one of the best features has to be the landscape StandBy mode baked right into iOS 17. This feature is revolutionary for those who like to dock their phone overnight or when working. Here’s how you can turn your iPhone into a nightstand hub with iOS 17’s new feature.

iOS 17 horizontal Standby mode

Apple is adding a new feature called “StandBy” to the always-on display on the iPhone. When you dock your iPhone in landscape mode, this feature automatically appears.

StandBy creates a smart display interface that shows a large clock, calendar, and other alerts. It also includes Siri suggestions and Live Activities, making it similar to having an Amazon Echo Show on your iPhone.

You have the ability to customize the StandBy experience with different times and styles. Notifications and widgets are cleverly integrated into the StandBy dashboard interface. This gives a unique look to your docked phone, not to mention the fact that you have the option to use pictures you’ve taken on your dock, for an even more personal touch.

Apple mentioned that the StandBy mode will be useful for people who keep their iPhone on their nightstand, dock it in the kitchen, or place it on their work desk. As a part of this update, Apple uses locational awareness to save preferences, meaning you can customize the StandBy dock on your phone differently in your office to the way you set it up on your nightstand. Your iPhone will remember.

StandBy will be a part of iOS 17, which will be released in the fall, however, beta for iOS 17 starts in June.
