No, you haven’t woken up in 2001: Space Odyssey, AI is pushing the boundaries of what is technologically possible every day. Today ChatGPT it is being taught how to access PCs through Java Script and plugins.

ChatGPT Plugin used to access PC files

Reddit user marcocastignoli posted a thread on /r/ChatGPT about the plugin that he created and how it can be used to access files on your PC and how it could give the Artificial Intelligence control of your PC

OpenAi opened up access for Web-browsing on ChatGPT recently, this also gave developers more availability to work on plugins for the AI. Marco also posted about his recent creation on Twitter about his recent creation, admitting that “Looking at a new Firefox tab popping up was really scary. Movie like AI controlling your computer”

They do go on to say that safety is the priority, that this is just an experiment to prove the almost endless possibilities of AI and that the plugin won’t be publicly published.

With AI being taught how to play games and gaining semi-autonomy through plugins like this, there is now a concern for the plugins that people aren’t admitting that they are testing for themselves. Some of the top comments in Marco’s Reddit thread mentioned that they have created something very powerful with Reddit user John_Val asking “Aren’t you basically creating a backdoor to your computer? What safeguards do you have?” but Marcocastignoli replied that there were “Indeed, no safeguards, it’s just an experiment. I was ready to shut down the process, checking the code that was about to run on my system”

Although this was a harmless self-isolated experiment it does open up the scientific possibilities around other people’s use of AI, for the sake of PC security there could come a point that we are hoping to hear “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” in a context of refusing to access PC backdoors and security networks from Hal9000.
