Things To Look For When Buying The Best Gaming Laptop

SSD - All the laptops in this article feature an SSD storage solution. A solid-state drive is vital in modern computing and especially so in a gaming laptop. Old hard drives are slow and can negatively impact games and in-game performance. An SSD will give you quick boot times and load your games much quicker.

IPS Panel - IPS panels feature in all but one of the featured gaming laptops and with speedy response times too! If you are going for a gaming laptop, then the chances are you will be using this as your day to day computer. IPS panels bring better color reproduction, accuracy, and improved image quality. The viewing angles you will get from the IPS angles are worth the minuscule extra response times.

Powerful GPU -  From the best laptop down to the budget option, they all feature powerful GPUs. A low-end graphics card will ruin your gaming experience either through poor FPS or terrible in-game graphics. At this price range, bad GPUs don't feature, and you can be sure to get high FPS on your AAA games with these selections.

RAM - You are going to want a minimum of 16GB RAM at this price bracket, so every selection features at least this amount. All the RAM in these laptops is, of course, DDR4 and the higher-spec gaming laptops feature as much as 32 GB.

Resolution

Most gaming laptops are going to be 1080p however, one of the selections on this list offers 4K gaming. When it comes to laptops and their smaller screen sizes, you can generally still get a brilliant image out of 1080p.

Refresh Rate

The refresh rates on the featured gaming laptops are all high and ready for responsive gaming. All of the laptops feature 144Hz refresh rate apart from the Razer Blade products which feature 240Hz and 60Hz. The 60Hz laptop is only this low due to its 4K resolution.

The Best Gaming Laptops Breakdown

#1

Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701

The Asus ROG Zephyrus GX701 is packed with some of the best components you could want in a gaming laptop. The classic ROG design can be spotted from a mile away before you even open this machine. The ROG logo features large on the back, and the laptop looks incredibly thin. The laptop features the same brushed aluminum effect we see on ROG's Strix products and looks great against the backlit keyboard. The Zephyrus gaming laptop weighs 2.6 KG, which is lightweight, and that is hardly surprising when you see how thin this is. The RGB keyboard is towards the front rather than having a big space for a tracker pad. This change is excellent and means the user can have the laptop screen a bit further away if desired. If you were after this for ease of use then don't worry, the tracker pad is featured however it cleverly co-exists with the number pad.

This ultra-thin gaming laptop fits an impressive amount of power into such a small space. Running this machine is an i7, which may not be the best CPU on the market, but it is one powerful chip, and perfect for a gaming laptop. Behind the Intel processor sits an Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics card. This GPU is one of the latest releases (apart from the Super series) from Nvidia and has enough power to run any game at max settings. With this GPU, you can also take advantage of games that feature ray tracing and just generally benefit from having one of the best GPUs available.

Asus has included 32GB of reasonably fast RAM (2666 MHz) which means you aren't going to have to upgrade the RAM unless you require a quicker speed. For storage, Asus has done away with any HDDs and implemented a 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD. This SSD will be able to house your operating system, games, and media files without a sweat.

The display on this gaming laptop is a great feature on the surface and inside too. The 17.3" display is surrounded with a very thin edge that goes with the general thinness of the laptop. Whilst featuring HDR and an IPS panel, this full HD screen also comes with a refresh rate of 144Hz, making for smooth, responsive gaming.

With some of the best technical specs and features on the list, it was hardly surprising to see the Zephyrus come out on top. The only place we stumble with the laptop is the price, but if you can afford it, then you are going to be pretty happy with this premium gaming laptop.

#2

MSI GS75 Stealth

The MSI GS75 Stealth may not have a catchy name, but oh boy is it a stunner. The Stealth is one of the nicest gaming laptops we have seen in a long time thanks to its ultra-thin build, gold trim, and an RGB backlit keyboard. This gaming laptop is similar in performance to the Asus ROG Zephyrus only with an older CPU and half as much storage space. The keyboard is in a more conventional place compared to the ROG laptop, but the keys look great, especially when the RGB is on.

This may not be the thinnest on the list but wow is it thin. The thinness of these gaming laptops is always impressive, considering the hardware underneath. At the heart of this laptop sits the 8th gen i7 which is capable of running at 4.1GHz with a little boost. Supporting this great gaming CPU is the almighty Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU. The RTX 2080 is an 8GB beast with the ability to utilize the new ray tracing technology. Just in case you aren't familiar with an RTX 2080, this GPU will run whichever game you desire without breaking a bead of sweat, and you can be sure to get good FPS counts.

MSI includes 32GB of RAM (2666 MHz) which is quick enough for the Intel CPU. In the storage department, MSI hasn't really done enough, in my opinion. For $3000 I would like to see a bit more storage. However, the fast 512 GB is enough for your operating system and games.

The display on this gaming laptop is excellent and as good as the rest on this list. The 17.3" screen features a low response time of 3ms despite being an IPS panel. Impressively the screen also has a refresh rate of 144Hz, which is always favored in the competitive sphere. The 1080p FHD display is enclosed in a super-thin bezel adding some extra style points.

This may not be the best on the list with a rather underwhelming storage solution, but it looks absolutely fantastic. Don't worry, it isn't just a looker, it has enough power underneath to keep you gaming for years!

#3

Razer Blade 15-4K

There are only a few subtle differences between this Blade and the 240Hz one that also features in this article. While the design is mostly the same, the price certainly isn't, and that comes down to the lovely components. The Blade 15 is constructed out of aluminum and is one of the most premium feelings of the laptops in this list. This does come with a hefty price tag and features less RAM and storage than the Asus ROG gaming laptop; however, this has 4K resolution up its sleeve.

The laptop is the same size as the Blade 15-240Hz and has the same CPU at its disposal. The Intel i7-9750H is an excellent gaming CPU for laptops and its great to see it feature in so many products. The CPU will run at 2.6GHz and can be boosted if required to 4.5GHz. Alongside the CPU this time we see the Nvidia RTX 2080 which is one of the best GPUs out there at the moment. The RTX 2080 will handle all the games in the world and do it in max settings, so its got you covered.

Inside we see 16GB of RAM, which is a good amount for gaming these days. The storage solution for the price, however, is a bit of a shocker. 512GB SSD storage for a $3000 laptop isn't the best deal of the century, but the SSD drive will be enough for your games and operating system, so a supplemental external HDD would be a great addition.

This 15.6" display features the biggest resolution on the list, that's right, 4K gaming baby! The UHD display sports an OLED touch screen which is extremely high quality. The refresh rate is only 60Hz, but this is considered the right figure for 4K gaming.

An expensive choice but 4K gaming has finally been made portable!

#4

Razer Blade 15-240Hz

Razers Blade 15 is a very interesting product, and Razer brings something a bit different into this list, 240Hz gaming. The laptop overall looks excellent and screams Razer thanks to its simplicity. The gaming laptop is constructed out of aluminum, which gives a real premium feel to the Blade. Overall it is quite conventional-looking, and from certain angles, you wouldn't really notice it was a gaming laptop. This laptop will perform brilliantly for gaming and gives readers a chance to save a bit of cash if the $3000 options are off the table. The keyboard on this laptop is probably one of the most boring on the list; however, it is classy looking, especially when the Chroma is switched on.

The laptop is pretty thin, which seems to be a common theme with modern gaming laptops, and we love it! At the helm of the Blade 15 sits an Intel i7-9750H CPU with size cores and it will run at 4.5GHz max boost. This CPU is excellent for gaming and quick enough to make this laptop your day to day computer. Supporting the processing power is the brilliant RTX 2070, which may not be as good as a 2080 but it sure does perform well for gaming.

Razer includes a dual kit of 16GB RAM, which should be more than enough for the average gamer. Razer does let themselves down with the poor storage solution in this laptop. You only get 256 GB of SSDDD space in the Blade so an external HDD may need to be purchased for backing it up.

The Blade features a 15.6" screen. The 1080p display offers the highest refresh rate on the list with 240Hz. This is impressive, but taking advantage of such a high refresh rate may only be possible on certain titles.

The overall combination of components, the build quality, and the price, make this an attractive gaming laptop option.

#5

ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop

This Asus TUF gaming laptop resembles a standard laptop from the outside but once flipped open; it is immediately recognizable as a gaming budget beast. Constructed mostly of plastic the laptop features a brushed aluminum effect on the keyboard panel which accents the unique looking keys quite nicely. This gaming laptop is pretty light, weighing just 2.1 KG and although its plastic there doesn't seem to be any give in the chassis. The screen is nice enough with a relatively thin bezel around the edge. As mentioned, the keyboard is a unique design to some Asus boards, and it actually looks quite impressive. With the RGB lighting, I would go as far as to say the keyboard is the nicest aesthetic feature on this laptop.

Laptop speakers are a bit lackluster, and you are never really going to get impressive sound performance, but this does feature virtual 7.1 surround sound. Asus laptops have the companies new anti-dust cooling system, which pushes dust out of your laptop through vents. This anti-dust feature is a brilliant idea seeing as dust is the enemy, and it could prolong the life of your laptop.

This may be a budget option on this list, but it is one of the best gaming laptops for its price and would handle most games with ease. At the center, we see a 2.3GHz Ryzen 7-3750H. This processor can be boosted to 4GHz and will not only handle your workstation tasks without a hitch, but gaming is also improved with this CPU. To go along with the powerful CPU is a fantastic mid-range GPU, the GTX 1660 Ti. With this GPU you are getting plenty of FPS in any AAA title, and that's in max settings too! The Ryzen chip needs to be supported with an adequate amount of fast RAM, so we see 16GB of DDR4 RAM featured. The laptop only features a 256 GB SSD which may not seem like a lot but it enough for your operating system and a couple of your favorite games. Not to worry though the SSD is backed up by a 1TB HDD which will easily store the rest of your bits and bobs.

The 15.6" 1080p display may not seem like a lot for your cash, but it is a typical gaming spec at this price range, and it still comes with a 120Hz refresh rate so you can get some smooth action on the go. The screen size may be underwhelming, but the panel is IPS, giving you a greater picture quality and improved viewing angles.

Gaming laptops can be pricey, so this budget option gives you a chance to spend a bit less and still get some great gaming results.

Is a Gaming Laptop Worth It?

Whether or not a gaming laptop is worth your money is largely up to you. Will a gaming laptop beat the performance or price of a gaming desktop? No, it won't. Despite this, gaming laptops are always improving, and the technology is always gradually reducing, leaving us with some better deals as time moves on. These high-end laptops cost a lot of money, but they do offer a certain level of convenience and power you can't get from anything else.

At this price point, the hardware isn't going to vary much as manufacturers try and put the best components they can into these gaming laptops. To give an option to a wider variety of our readers, we decided to include a 4K resolution gaming laptop, the Razer Blade. We also wanted to include our best gaming laptop for under $1000 as it is an excellent deal.

One thing we have noticed is that laptops are becoming a bit more affordable and do tend to drop in price a bit quicker than they used to. The Asus ROG Zephyrus gaming laptop came out on top, with excellent components and a well thought out design. Regardless of what you pick, you are going to get some superb gaming performance with each of these selections.
