Threads by Meta has blown up massively with a direct challenge to Twitter. The new messaging app is a text-based social media platform, allowing users to share their opinions and silly ideas with a 500-character limit. Threads will let you have public conversations in real-time, and reply to other posts much like Twitter, in a scrolling-style feed. The app has already secured millions of downloads and is gaining traction thanks to the way it directly links to your Instagram account. During this initial boom of users, many are searching for threads online only to find you need to access the new platform via your mobile. Threads is only available via the App Store or Google Play for now but will it always be the case?

There is demand for Threads to join desktop

It seems a little odd that Threads requires you to access it via mobile apps alone and the current absence of a desktop version is potentially holding back millions of additional users. Instagram has over 1 billion users across the world and the founder Mark Zuckerberg has already set his ambitions on a similar number for Threads. Meta claims Threads will eventually be interoperable with other apps such as Mastodon and WordPress. While a lot of the world has a smartphone, there are still plenty that prefer the convivence of the same apps via a desktop.

When you head to Threads website, you are essentially made to scan a QR code and that is it. There is no official word of what is to come for those that yearn for a desktop version but it isn’t a stretch to imagine one in the future.

Is Threads and Twitter the same?

It is no surprise to see such demand for Threads this early, with a subsect of Twitter users outraged over recent events with Tweet Deck, among a few other things. Similarly to Twitter, Threads lets users share their ludicrous thoughts in 500 characters, where others can share and repost. While it can be a little frustrating posting on all social channels the line “There can only be one” starts to rattle in our mind.

While both apps are direct competitors and not the same, most of the basic functions work the same as you would expect from any social platform.

Threads on desktop work around?

It is technically possible to get Threads running on a desktop PC, however, its definitely not worth the effort. You would need to setup an emulation layer, however, this is not a supported method and we recommend you just wait for Meta to, you know, do the obvious thing.

For those that wish to try out Threads, the easiest way would be via your existing Instagram account, as we mentioned they are linked. While it is a mobile app exclusive for now, there would be no logic in Threads remaining that way – Zuckerberg, please fix.
