The AI craze is only just beginning, and Google is creating more tools that implement it into everyday work. Its current working title is Genesis and is there to create news stories from the provided information, freeing up journalists’ jobs.

NYTimes reports how it, Washington Post, and News Corp have been pitched this new tool by Google. It consumes information such as details of the current event and creates news on the topic. A user of the test said it could work as an assistant automating tasks required and freeing up the writer to do other tasks. This should move AI from the generative type people have come to know like ChatGPT.

What professionals are saying about Google Genesis

Other executives that saw what Genesis could do, remaining anonymous, spoke of the toll as unsettling. Two of them suggest it takes for granted what it actually takes into producing accurate and good news pieces.

While Jenn Crider, a spokeswoman for the company talks of working and exploring the use of AI tools to help with work. They are in fact not there as a replacement for the role of a journalist in creating articles. What it could allow for is help with titling the piece or even the style of writing used in it.

This would make it more like a helping hand along the way, like the Microsoft Copilot tool to help users in the various software. It brings us back to when Clippy would lovingly adorn our screens to help out throughout Word.

Furthering the debate, Jeff Jarvis, a journalism professor, commented on both its pros and cons. Suggesting that if it is capable of delivering factual information reliably it should be used. However, if misused and doesn’t include nuance and in-depth understanding, it can lead to damage to credibility and the organization.

Another consideration for using the Genesis tool is how much factual data it actually provides. Since the likes of ChatGPT may give the wrong information it does worry us if it could do the same. As it predicts sentences it might not give true information. As such, if the accuracy is not checked, it could mislead readers, we’ve already seen publishers have to issue corrections for AI articles, which Genesis could lead to the same outcome.
