The free-to-play game features action-packed air, ground, and naval combat with vehicles from the 20th-century World Wars, so it has some historical authenticity and realism to it as well. War Thunder has a lot to offer, but you will need a capable processor to run the game at a high framerate. Since War Thunder is competitive in nature, having a higher-than-average FPS helps improve your reaction time and increases your odds of coming out on top after a firefight. Of course, it also makes for a more seamless and enjoyable gaming experience. 

With that said, let’s find out what the best CPU for War Thunder is. 


What are War Thunder’s system requirements?

Gaijin recommends a system with the following specs for War Thunder:

  • OS: Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or Ryzen 5 3600 and better
  • Memory: 16 GB and more
  • Video Card: DirectX 11 level video card or higher and drivers: Nvidia GeForce 1060 and higher, Radeon RX 570 and higher
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Hard Drive: 95 GB

These are fairly ordinary requirements, and they make sense when you think about War Thunder’s gameplay. Core i5 and Ryzen 5 CPUs are generally mid-range processors with specs tailored to fit the needs of gamers. They make excellent inclusions in budget-friendly gaming rigs. 


Best CPU for War Thunder – AMD Ryzen 5 7600X

We consider the Ryzen 5 7600X the best CPU for War Thunder. The processor is a direct upgrade to the Ryzen 5 3600 specified by Gaijin’s official recommendations – by two generations. 

While the Ryzen 5 3600 is a solid CPU, it doesn’t offer the best clock speeds. A high boost clock is necessary to maximize in-game framerate since games (especially older ones like War Thunder) carry out the bulk of their processing on a few threads only. 

The Ryzen 5 7600X delivers beyond expectations with its 5.3GHz boost clock, which is higher than we’ve ever seen a Ryzen 5 CPU feature before. It’s even 200MHz faster than any Core i5 processor – and Intel CPUs are known to have higher clock speeds.

The CPU’s best-in-class boost clocks are very nicely complemented by the 13% IPC (Instructions per clock) increase AMD allowed all Zen 4 processors, allowing the Ryzen 5 7600X to offer unmatched single-core performance at its relatively low price point.

The CPU comes equipped with 12 threads running on 6 high-performance cores. A thread count of 12 isn’t all that great today, but it’s more than enough for gaming because games currently don’t use a lot of threads. The low thread count does limit your GPU options, though; you’ll have to be careful to avoid a bottleneck

The processor is great not only for War Thunder but also for just about every other title out there today. If you’re a gamer, it’s one of your best options.

The downside

The only caveat here is the high one-time upgrade cost. While the 7600X processor itself is very affordably priced and offers you excellent value for money, you will have to pair it up with a new AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory.
