Baldur’s Gate 3 – How to perform a sneak attack

Sneak attack is an ability that only the Rogue is able to use. As such, when playing as a rogue or multiclassing into the rogue class, you will see the sneak attack option on your hot bar at the bottom of the screen. Click on the sneak attack symbol and then click on an enemy. The symbol is that of a hand holding a dagger.

Before you can perform a sneak attack, you need to meet one of the following prerequisites:

  • You need to have advantage on your attack roll against the enemy
  • Another foe needs to be within five feet of the enemy

Once you meet one of the prerequisites, you will be able to perform a sneak attack against an enemy whether it be with a melee weapon like a rapier or a ranged weapon like a hand crossbow.

To get advantage over an enemy, you can use certain cantrips like True Strike which is learnable by the Arcane Trickster subclass can be used. Advantage can also be attained by using the hide action. Since rogues are built for deception, this is a perfect way to avoid damage as well. Just hope that your enemies don’t have good perception.

The other prerequisite is easier to use and simply requires you to position an ally next to the foe you want to attack with a sneak attack. Either method works to perform the sneak attack. Just make sure that you choose the correct action when attacking to apply your sneak attack damage.
