Penalties are a very important part of EA Sports FC 24. If you’re lucky enough to secure one in a match, you do not want to mess it up. If your tournament match heads to penalties after extra time, you do not want to mess them up. Whether in a regular game or a penalty shootout, you need to know how to nail penalties.

How do I take penalties in EA Sports FC 24?

To shoot a penalty kick, you need to earn the penalty. Either the defense needs to commit a foul in the box, or a handball in the box. Their playstyle, whether aggressive or passive, can lead them to commit fouls, but they’re not very common.

Secondly, if a tournament match (one that has to end with a winner and a loser and not a draw) ends tied after 90 minutes and a 30-minute extra time, it heads to a penalty shootout. Those are the only ways to land penalty shots in FC 24.

The shoot button, which remains the same for penalties as regular shots, is:

  • B on Xbox consoles
  • Circle on PlayStation
  • A on Nintendo Switch

If you come to this situation, it’s very much like shooting a regular shot. There will be some differences, however. The composure ring one of the new features was added in FIFA 23 to make penalties more rewarding. It’s advised to shoot when the ring is as small as it can be.

There’s no reticle for aiming anymore, either. Players can still aim with the left stick, but the left stick can only go about three feet from either post, so it’s harder to outright miss the shot. The higher the player’s penalty attribute is, the more accurate they will be. Aim for the bottom left, bottom right, top left, top right, middle bottom, or middle-top. The keeper can only go one way.

You can control the power with which you shoot a penalty as well. You don’t necessarily want to boot it as hard as you can, as that leaves much more possibility for error. Getting the right power and the right aim is something that will likely vary each time. Your player name has a bar under it. The longer you hold the shoot button, the more it fills. That’s your power metric, and too powerful will cause you to shoot it over the bar or outside the posts.

Beyond that, it’s just a guessing game between you and the goalkeeper. It’s a mind game, but you are always at the advantage. You know where your shot is going, the keeper does not. They have to simply guess and dive one way, and the odds are good that it won’t be the right way.

It’s a lot more challenging to be the keeper in this scenario. Not only do you have to guess right, but you also have to block powerful shots away. If it’s during the match and not during a penalty shootout, you have to be wary of the rebound and a potential second shot.

For the player, it’s easier. Shoot the ball with accuracy, but be prepared to run over and shoot it again as you could have another one-on-one scenario where you can score even if you missed the first shot.

Penalties in FC 24, which has Manchester City star Erling Haaland on the cover, are the same regardless of game mode. Volta Football, Ultimate Team, Player Career, Manager Career, and more will all have the same method of penalty.
