The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to the incredibly popular Breath of the Wild, and the newest title in the world-famous Zelda series. Fans have been gleefully enjoying all its new abilities, locations and its brand new storyline.

With a host of brand new gameplay mechanics for fans to, well, play with, it can be easy to forget some of our favorite mechanics from Breath of the Wild. Did you forget how to parry your shield? No worries, because we’re here to give you a tutorial of how to perform this trick.

How to parry your shield in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Parrying your shield is a great combat mechanic in Tears of the Kingdom anywhere in Hyrule, and it’s incredibly simple to do it. All you need to do is this:

  • hold your shield up while targeting using the ZL button
  • right before your enemy strikes, hit the A button to parry the attack

There you go! Now you know how to parry your shield whether this is your first Zelda game or you’re a series veteran. Parrying is a simple and effective way to deflect enemy attacks and leave them wide open for a counter-attack.

What does parrying your shield do in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

Parrying your shield will deflect your opponent’s attack and give you the perfect opening to strike while they are vulnerable. This lets Link get tons of hits in before the monster is able to collect themselves and fight back again. When done correctly, parrying also does no damage to your shield, so it won’t break or lose durability while you’re parrying the attack! Make sure to note that when using a two-handed weapon, you can’t hold your shield, so don’t try to parry when using one or else you’ll get hit.

Link can parry using any shield in Tears of the Kingdom, from the humble Wooden Shield to the mighty Hylian one. So no matter how early in the game you are, you can still use this effectively to win any fight.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is available on any Nintendo Switch console.
