Shield surfing is one of the fastest and most unique ways to get around in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While Link’s shield is mainly used for blocking, he will occasionally use it as a sort of skateboard. You are free to shield surf in the game but it can be tricky to master. If you want to build your shield surfing cred, here’s how to shield surf in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How do you shield surf in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

To shield surf, you’ll need to have a shield equipped before pressing the following buttons in order: ZL, X, and A. Hold the ZL button on the Nintendo Switch controller to ready your weapon and block with your shield. The camera will shift behind you once you do so. Next, press the X button to jump into the air before pressing A immediately after. Link will then hop onto his equipped shield and begin surfing along the ground.

What can you shield surf on in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

Of course, you’ll need to find the proper surface to shield surf on. Look for a hill or slope to surf down and Link will gain momentum the further he travels on his shield. The next best thing is the find a rail. They’re new in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and allow Link to reach new areas by surfing from one location to the next. Feel free to perform some jump tricks as you glide along. Surfing on a shield is a great option for exploration and provides a cool fun way to get around. The best part is, you will not use stamina while you surf along.

However, shield surfing does wear down the shield’s durability. So, if you do it a lot, eventually, a basic shield will shatter into a million pieces. Of course this may not be the case for shields such as the Hylian Shield.

Shield surfing is not a new feature in the sequel as it first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There was even a minigame where you surfed down a slope to beat the clock.
