Turning on proximity chat

Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 have now implemented proximity chat. It’s a fun feature if you want to talk to other players in your lobby, bargain with players for your life or theirs in-game, or it can just straight up become a source for toxic insulting with enemies.

To turn it on OR off, as might be the case for the insulting part of the deal, you can follow these simple steps:

  • Open the Options menu in Warzone 2 or Modern Warfare 2
  • Go to Account
  • Ensure that the Crossplay settings is set to Off, then turn it back On again
  • Ensure that the Crossplay communication settings is set to Off, then turn it back On again
  • Move to Audio settings
  • Scroll down to the ‘Voice Chat’ section and enable or disable Proximity Chat
  • Then all you have to do is save the changes

There you have it, it’s as simple as that, really. Now you can go out and have fun with it. We anticipated a lot of funny moments were going to be captured when we first caught wind of this added feature, and players did not disappoint.

How does proximity chat work in Warzone 2?

Proximity Chat in Warzone 2 is the default setting for players using a microphone in the game’s chat system. This means that your microphone is open to the lobby, more specifically, anyone within your proximity/range i.e. a specific radius of your position. This radius is around 55 meters. So enemies will be nearby if you can hear them. This is different from the main voice chat that is always available with your teammates.

It allows you to overhear enemy Operator squads if you’re close enough to them, but naturally they can also listen to you. This opens up whole new tactical avenues to explore in Warzone 2, whether that’s reacting to their sounds to locate them, listening in on their plans to ambush them, or speaking to them directly to propose an alliance, or play mind games.
