The newest title in the famous Legend of Zelda series is here, and The legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been sweeping up fans back into Hyrule with a new story, new enemies and plenty of new mechanics.

In this Zelda game, players will step back into the shoes of the Hero of Hyrule, Link, to fight Ganondorf in this sequel to the wildly popular (no pun intended) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Since the first trailer was released in 2019, fans have been wondering, will Zelda finally be a playable character?

Can you play as Zelda in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

It seems the fanbase was wrong this time. Unfortunately no, Princess Zelda is not playable in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. She has recently gone missing and the plot revolves around finding her whereabouts with clues she has left in the overworld, like memories in the geoglyphs that are etched into the landscape.

From the very first trailer for Tears of the Kingdom was shown at E3 in 2019, fans have speculated that the titular Princess Zelda would finally be playable in a mainline series game. A big factor in these rumors was that Zelda received a pretty big haircut.

Her golden hair flowed down to her waist in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but now in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom her hair has been cropped up to her chin. The community speculated that this would make her easier to animate for combat and other exploring, which is what a playable character would be doing.

What games can you play as Zelda?

If you’re still craving to play as the lovely Princess Zelda, fear not, Nintendo has released games where you can play the heroine of the series:

  • The Super Smash Bros series has Zelda as one of the many playable fighters
  • Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity allow you to play as Princess Zelda
  • Cadence of Hyrule, a rhythmic action-adventure for Nintendo Switch
  • Wand of Gamelon and Zelda’s adventure, the infamous CD-i titles

We probably wouldn’t recommend those last two though. There’s a good reason they’ve been buried by Nintendo.
