The recent delay of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has given fans more time to inspect the game and raise a few more questions about it. Namely, if TOTK is truly an RPG or not.

While this might not be the most pressing issue compared to this possibly being the last Switch game, it is still a question that some fans need to be answered. Let’s go over if Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is truly an RPG.

Is Zelda TOKT An RPG?

While Zelda Tears of the Kingdom does fall under the RPG genre it is more of an Action-RPG than anything else.

This means you don’t spend as much time grinding for XP in encounter after encounter but instead level up with story progress. Tackling harder challenges and tougher foes will grant you better gear.

Of course, you better be ready to return to re-acquire that gear if the weapon degradation mechanic is in TOTK.

Assuming that upgrading your health and stamina works as it did in Breath of the Wild, you won’t need XP to level up but instead the orbs from shrines. While this is a bit of a grind in the long run, it is nowhere near as bad as grinding for XP like a normal RPG.

This is why TOTK is an Action-RPG, The game is less reliant on your overall health level and what gear you have. You can defeat almost any enemy with any weapon you can manage to get your hands on, regardless of your health or gear.

You can still spend time grinding up to get better gear and weapons that will give you the advantage in any fight if you do so desire. But the game does focus more on skill than just pure numbers and stats overall.

So if you were worried that just because Zelda TOTK was an RPG it would be boring to play, rest assured that it will be an action-packed adventure following the original Breath of the Wild.
