Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s biggest, and in some ways most controversial update, is now here. While Season 3 brings new maps, operators and more, there are reports of pay-to-win mechanics emerging in DMZ and the premium battle pass has been replaced by the $29.99 Black Cell Battle Pass bundle.

We look into is the MW2 Season 3 BlackCell Battle Pass worth it, but whatever way you look at it, $29,99 is a lot of money. For a reminder of what’s included, please see below:

  • Battle Pass BlackCell Sector, Token Tier Skips (25 on PlayStation)
  • 1,100 COD Points Bonus
  • Immediate Item Unlocks, Including New Operator and Weapon Blueprint:
  • Special Season 03 Bonus Operator Skins

There was a general view that because of the hefty price tag, the Battle Pass would not take off as parts of the community were vocal about their disappointment. However, all of those assumptions were dashed as it was revealed the BlackCell Battle Pass jumped straight into the top 3 spot on Steam. At the time of writing, it is currently the fourth most-popular item on the store. Unsurprisingly, this has left a core part of the MW2 community confused and disappointed.

One wrote on the MW2 sub-Reddit: “Blackcell at #3 top seller on steam, cdl skins and blueprints are in almost every match. This is why nothing improves, they keep making money without having to change anything for good.” Another added: “Waiting for the 145th post where the game “is dead bro, me and all my friends stopped playing.”

Yep, a reminder that those who think can boycott the game are delusional. We are just a tiny minority of a minority of a minority here in reddit (and even in twitter).

Not everyone though thinks the hate towards BlackCell is justified. One gamer wrote: “Probably gonna get downvoted for this, but I honestly like Blackcell. I think the skins look pretty nice and it’s not a bad value for $30. I bought it, and I’m seeing the skins everywhere in multiplayer.

“Just because an opinion is popular here on Reddit doesn’t mean it’s the majority opinion. We’re a comparatively small fraction of the total playerbase.”

So, what do we think? In our view, whether there are pay-to-win mechanics or bundles that are more expensive, there is no denying there’s tons of content on offer in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. No one needs to pay for stuff in the game to have a great time. Sure, you’ll see a lot of new skins and shiny weapons blueprints in matches, but this shouldn’t bother you – it’s just about having fun. I am far from an expert in MW2 (I am currently running around with my 150 Level while pales in comparison to many with 400+ scores), but have been amazed at just how much content is up for grabs without paying a single dollar.

Yes, the new BlackCell Battle Pass is expensive, but there’s tons of content in there – and it’s definitely not essential to enjoy the game. The $29.99 is a lot, especially given the cost of living, but so long as there’s enough content to justify (and only you will be able to make that decision) then it could be a worthwhile purchase.
