The Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT, are AMD’s newest GPUs based on the new RDNA 3 architecture. Starting on December 13, 2022, both graphics cards will be sold at retail for $999 and $899, respectively.

In this article, let’s briefly contrast the most recent AMD RX 7900 series GPUs with the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 from NVIDIA. We already have access to the RTX 4090 and are aware of its speed.

As with its Ryzen processors, AMD is putting a revolutionary chiplet architecture into practice. This time, six Memory Cache Die (MCD) are placed between the GCD or Graphics Compute Die (three on each side).

The MCDs are 6nm chips, whereas the GCD is a 5nm device. AMD was able to achieve up to 15% higher speeds and up to 54% better power efficiency thanks to this strategy.

Additionally, this assisted AMD in lowering the price of its GPUs. AMD was able to reduce costs by using 5nm and 6nm circuits, in contrast to NVIDIA’s RTX 4000 series GPUs, which employ the more expensive TSMC 4N fab process.

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX features 12,288 streaming processors, compared to the RX 7900 XT’s 10,752, even though they are not exactly equivalent. The RTX 4080 will have 9,728 CUDA cores, whilst the NVIDIA RTX 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores.

The RTX 4090 and 4080 by NVIDIA feature GDDR6X memory, which is considerably faster. For both graphics cards, AMD is still using GDDR6. The RX 7900 XTX contains 24GB of VRAM, which is the same as the RTX 4090. The RTX 4080 only has 16GB of memory.

However, it is faster GDDR6X memory, whereas the RX 7900 XT has 20GB of memory capacity. Unfortunately, this generation of GPUs doesn’t have clock speeds surpassing 3GHz.

The performance of AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT was not previewed in any way. All of the displayed performance slides discussed the RX 7900 XTX. Is AMD waiting to see how the NVIDIA RTX 4080 performs?

Based on the preliminary facts AMD revealed at the presentation, we believe AMD’s RX 7000 GPUs will be something other than the performance king in this generation.

Even if the RX 7900 XT is slower than the RTX 4080, it still triumphs over the latter because it is less expensive and provides a better cost per frame. When retailers see the performance of these GPUs, we hope they will keep the prices the same. However, they might offer a better deal.

In terms of the last gen, the new RX 7900 cards have been compared to the RX 6950 XT. From AMD’s benchmarks, they both are seen to perform better than the top end of the last gen for a better or similar price.
