The first official AMD Ryzen 8040 series release date information has just been revealed by the red team at their latest online event. Although a specific date was not mentioned, we have been given a (fairly broad) window of time in which the new mobile CPUs will definitely be available to buy. Read below for this confirmed info, our prediction on a more narrow timeframe when we think we’ll see the mobile CPUs come out, and finally a breakdown of the specifications of the upcoming SKUs.

In their latest Advancing AI reveal event, AMD also showed of the Ryzen 8040 series laptops SKUs for the first time, and confirmed that we would be seeing the initial AMD Ryzen 8040 series release date as landing at some point in Q1 2024.

There’s been no official information beyond this, however if the release date of the Ryzen 7000 series laptops was anything to go by, then February seems to be the most likely month, after a reveal/unveiling of the laptops themselves at CES 2024. This is of course just our personal estimate, so take it with a pinch of salt.

AMD Ryzen 8040 series specs (confirmed)

Along with the release date, AMD have revealed the different SKUs within the 8040 line-up, along with their core & thread count, clock frequencies, cache, TDP value (measured in Watts), and whether or not they contain the AI core known as an NPU. You can see this info in the table below.

This ‘Hawk Point’ range of CPUs/APUs will all be based on the Zen 4 architecture and are essentially refreshes of the previous Ryzen 7040 ‘Phoenix Point’ range, with very similar core/thread count, clock speeds, and TDP, but improved Radeon integrated graphics and AI processing.

AMD Ryzen 8040 series release date FAQs

Will the Ryzen 8040 series be good for gaming?

Based on the information that AMD have revealed to us, the Ryzen 9 8940H will perform up to 76% better than the Intel Core i9 13900H in 1080p gaming scenarios on lower settings, when only the integrated graphics are used. We don’t yet have any indication how they will perform in conjunction with dedicated graphics cards, and it may be there isn’t much difference in this area from the previous generation, given the clock speeds and core counts are similar.

Will Ryzen 8040 series laptops be worth buying?

It’s early days yet, and it’s very difficult to say until third-party testing has been done, but based upon what we do know, Ryzen 8040 laptops will probably interest those looking for powerful integrated graphics, high power-efficiency, and AI processing for creative use and workflow tasks. We’ll have to wait and see to know for sure though.
