Could a beloved relic of gaming’s past be getting a fresh coat of paint? Goldeneye 007 has long been beloved by gamers. It is widely considered one of the best and most influential games of all time. For a game so beloved, you would expect ports and remasters to have made Goldeneye 007 more widely accessible. Fans have gone as far as to create their own in the interim.  But until now, the game has remained in its original state only. But that could finally be about to change. According to industry sources, a remaster of Goldeneye 007 will be announced in a matter of weeks. The news comes just in time for the franchise’s 60th anniversary

Bond is back in action?

The likelihood of Goldeneye 007 receiving a remaster is very high at this point. Recently, a set of achievements for the game were leaked, after True Achievements scooped the list from Microsoft’s serves. Rumours immediately began to swirl, and now they appear to be substantiated by a reliable source.

Jeff Grubb of Venturebeat believes that the project will be announced by Microsoft. This would be a departure from Golden 007’s original circumstances, as the game was initially published by Nintendo.

But the move makes sense. Microsoft are reaching more and more players. The overwhelming success of Game Pass continues to draw in a larger audience. And additionally, Goldeneye developers Rare left their Nintendo partnership to work with Microsoft way back in 2002. As part of the acquisition, Microsoft gained the rights to many of Rare’s existing IPs. That being said, the James Bond license is unlikely to belong just to Rare and Microsoft after all this time.

Could this point to Goldeneye’s original developers being involved with the remaster? It would make sense, even if Rare is only working in an advisory capacity. The developers would likely want to be involved with anything involving one of their most beloved games.

Goldeneye 007: An FPS for the ages

In many ways, Goldeneye 007 serves as the precursor to modern shooters. Far from being a simple licensed game, Goldeneye revolutionised FPS gameplay. It will be fascinating to see how the game stacks up compared to the modern games it so heavily inspired.
